"Mystery" Prototype Testing at Mulholland is the 2015 Subaru WRX - Plus Bonus Footage Posted: 21 May 2013 07:22 PM PDT One of the many regular car- and motorcycle-spotters at the infamous Mulholland Drive, just outside of Los Angeles, was on hand to film several passes of what he described as a "Mystery Car". "Some Mulholland passes from an un-named car," wrote YouTube author 31200MulhollandHwy, adding that, "CHP [California Highway Patrol] closed the road intermittently - Japanese crew wouldn't give any info on car." BMW-Toyota Sports Cars to Have Distinct Styling, May Ride on Stretched GT86 Platform Posted: 21 May 2013 05:20 PM PDT Earlier this year, BMW and Toyota announced they will jointly develop a midsize sports car. The move is part of the partnership initiated by the two companies in late 2011, which also includes the joint development of diesels, fuel cells and the latest lithium battery and hybrid technology. Of course, most car enthusiasts are more interested in the sports car project, which will fill empty spaces in both Toyota's and BMW's ranges. For Toyota, this could mean the return of the Supra, while for BMW it could be a standalone coupe positioned in a different segment (both in terms of dimensions and concept) than the 4-Series and the upcoming i8 plug-in hybrid sports car. New Peugeot 308 Station Wagon Speculatively Rendered Posted: 21 May 2013 04:32 PM PDT At this point, whatever you do, don't Google a photo of the old Peugeot 308 SW (estate/wagon) because I think it is one of the most unsuccessful attempts at turning a decently stylish hatchback into a load-lugger. The back is far too busy and bulky, and calling the light clusters oversized is an understatement. Now, though, that the new 308 has been revealed, means people can tamper with the photos and create different versions of it, speculating what the manufacturer might end up doing some time from now, like the above rendering from DesignRM. Toyota Reclaims Title of World’s Most Valuable Auto Brand from BMW Posted: 21 May 2013 03:56 PM PDT Toyota has ranked first among automakers in the BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands study released by market research company Millward Brown. The Japanese carmaker has overtaken last year's best ranks car manufacturer, BMW. Toyota's 2013 brand value rose 12 percent to $24.5 billion (€19.03 billion), mainly due to its significant inroads in the hybrid market, the study said. The Japanese automaker ranked 23rd amongst all brands, while came in behind at No.24. The German carmaker's brand value lost 2 percent to $24 billion (€18.65 billion)) compared to last year, with the reason for this being the lack of new product launches compared with past years. Sergio Marchionne Apologizes for Racial Slur against Italian Americans Posted: 21 May 2013 02:55 PM PDT The Italian American One Voice Coalition, which is the largest Italian American anti-bias organization in the U.S., announced it has received a formal written apology from Chrysler/Fiat CEO, Sergio Marchionne, for his use of a pejorative term, offensive to Italian Americans, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. You probably remember that, at a press conference at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, Marchionne commented on the long-delayed introduction of the new generation Alfa Romeos to the U.S. saying: "I cannot come up with a schlock product, I just won't. I won't put an American engine into that car. With all due respect to my American friends, it needs to be a wop engine. There are some things that are well-done in Italy." Read more » |
This is How an Irish Comedian Sells His Old 1990 VW Polo Posted: 21 May 2013 02:22 PM PDT We guess there are many ways to sell your used car, but we will admit that creating a music video clip and sharing it on an automotive classified website hadn't crossed our mind – then again, we're not comedians… Meet the funny lads over at Nostril Shorts who came up with the idea of promoting the sale of member Garry's 1990 VW Polo Mk2 C Squareback (a.k.a. Breadvan) on the popular classified ads site DoneDeal with a video. Read more » |
RCA Students Craft a Nifty-Looking Art Piece Inspired by Jaguar Posted: 21 May 2013 01:36 PM PDT People perceive art in different ways, especially when it concerns modern art, where the saying "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" holds very true. That said and for what it's worth, we like what the Royal College of Art (RCA) students Ewan Gallimore and Claire Miller came up with for a Jaguar competition. The carmaker chose their entry out of a total of nine submissions to display at the Clerkenwell Design Week, which runs in London from May 21 to 23. Read more » |
Next Land Rover Freelander Reportedly Ditching Nameplate to Join Discovery Family Posted: 21 May 2013 12:59 PM PDT We have just learnt from Autocar that Land Rover is reportedly ditching the Freelander name for the SUV's replacement, which will become a part of an extended Discovery family. The main reasoning behind this is the array of sub-brands they offer can be viewed as confusing – they are cleaning it up and making it easier for prospective buyers to understand. Read more » |
EV West’s All-Electric BMW M3 E36 Makes 850 Lb-Ft of Torque at the Wheels Posted: 21 May 2013 12:31 PM PDT Some say that a true performance EV cannot be fully realized with today's technology. They argue that the added weight of batteries makes handling and braking worse, and that the lack of engine noise detracts from the experience of driving. But now, with cars like the Tesla Model S receiving praise for their performance, it's definitely worth watching the video below – it's Drive's drive of EV West's Pikes Peak-ready BMW E36 M3, which has been converted to run on electricity. Toyota Teases All-New Corolla and Tells Us to Get "Really Excited" Posted: 21 May 2013 11:59 AM PDT After previewing the new generation of the Corolla with the "Furia Corolla" concept car at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show in January, Toyota is set for the world premiere of the actual production car, which will take place at a special event in a couple of weeks in California on June 6. But before that happens, the Japanese automaker will try to |
Skoda Rapid Estate or Possibly Next Gen Fabia Combi Spotted Virtually Undisguised Posted: 21 May 2013 11:32 AM PDT We always thought that an estate version of the Skoda Rapid was a very interesting proposition for its respective sector of the market, and we were expecting to see one very soon. Now, to be honest, we're not entirely sure that the car captured by the folks over at Nacho Fernández López' blog is indeed the new Rapid estate or the next generation Fabia Combi. The reason why we're leaving a question mark has to do as much with Skoda's one-style-fits all design strategy, as it has with the fact that this particular model featured a "Fabia" moniker on the tailgate. That's not to say Skoda may have placed the logo there simply to confuse us – which it did… Read more » |
Trophy Truck Almost Snaps in Two After Jump Goes Wrong Posted: 21 May 2013 10:53 AM PDT Each type of motorsport has very specific and highly specialized requirements. If it's Baja-style trophy trucks you're into, then what you need is a featherweight body, strong tubular spaceframe chassis and suspension with as much travel as you can get, which at first may look like overkill, but it proves its use when doing jumps like the one in the video we've posted below. It was shot at the Silver Lake sand dunes, a place where many gather to test out their off-road contraptions, and get as much airtime as possible. Read more » |
Designer Gives the New 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe the Shooting Brake Treatment Posted: 21 May 2013 10:28 AM PDT In the automotive world, shooting break or shooting brake is a term used to describe a distinct and rakish estate body style, more often than not, with two passenger doors, a sloping roofline, and a tailgate, though, over the years, we've also seen four-door models like the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake. Three Former Saab Execs Jailed for Accounting Fraud Charges Posted: 21 May 2013 08:54 AM PDT Saab, in its current form, is taking a break from making cars, but they should at some point start building an electric vehicle, or at least that was the announced plan when the company was taken over, a while back. However, other interconnected stories have been cropping up ever since, and the name Saab has been in the news quite a lot, despite the fact that the company is for all intents and purposes, dead. This time we bring you a story about three unnamed, former company executives who were recently put behind bars for accounting fraud. According to The Detroit News, they are "suspected of aggravated attempts to avoid tax controls" – fixing Saab's accounts in 2010 and 2011, while the company was under the control of Spyker. In Sweden, this brings about a four-year prison sentence. Read more » |

Check out 2013 Gumball 3000 Rally's Impressive Lineup of Cars Posted: 21 May 2013 07:13 AM PDT The Gumball 3000 rally started on Saturday, May 18, and videos with the ridiculously expensive cars that take part in the competition have already appeared on YouTube. The first two clips were shot at Koenigsegg's headquarters in Sweden, where the cars made a stop. The rainy weather that was responsible for an accident in the first day of the rally – a Lamborghing LP670-4 SuperVeloce, didn't stop the expensive lineup from continuing their journey, as you can see in the third video which follows contestants down Swedish roads. That's One Helluva Strange Bimmer: 1982 BMW M35 Speedster Posted: 21 May 2013 06:05 AM PDT While poking around on eBay today we found this ambiguous 1982 BMW 320i that doesn't know if it wants to be a junior 633CSi Cabriolet from the Back the Future 2 flick, a poor man's track racer or a homemade M3 wannabe. Perhaps it's all three in one… The owner of the car removed the roof and cut around two-thirds of the windshield and A-pillars, adding M3 E30-like fender extensions, a hood scoop, front and rear spoilers and a roll cage, while also partially stripping out the interior – for some unexplainable reason, the unusable rear seat bench and door panels were left intact.
