Chrysler to Tesla: Not So Fast, We Were the First to Repay Government Loan Posted: 22 May 2013 07:42 PM PDT After Audi, it's Chrysler's to turn its guns on Tesla, only this time, it's not about a sales report from a news agency, but it regards a press statement made by the maker of the battery-powered Model S. On Wednesday, Tesla announced that it paid off in full a $465 million loan that the Energy Department made in 2010, nine years earlier than scheduled. In the statement, the California-based company also added, "Following this payment, Tesla will be the only American car company to have fully repaid the government." Read more » |
Official: Ford to End Australian Production in 2016, Kills Off Falcon Posted: 22 May 2013 07:05 PM PDT As we reported earlier, Ford announced today that it will cease its Australian manufacturing operations on October 16, 2016, leading to the loss of around 1,200 jobs out of a total of 3,500 people it employs at its production plants at Broadmeadows and Geelong that build the Falcon and the related Territory SUV. During a press conference held in Melbourne today, Bob Graziano, president and CEO of Ford Australia, said that the company could not continue to build cars in the country after reporting a loss of $141 million after tax in the last financial year, and more than $600 million over the past five years. Like his counterparts over at Holden, which will likely kill the Commodore in 2016 and put the final nail in the coffin of Australia's long production-run of rear-wheel drive sedans, utes and estates, Graziano also blamed the rising value of the Australian dollar against other currencies. Breaking News: Ford Poised to Shut Down Shop in Australia, Announcement is Imminent [Live Video] Posted: 22 May 2013 06:00 PM PDT We'll know for sure in about half an hour from now, but the word on Australian news sites, including The Australian and ABC Online, is that Ford plans to stop producing cars in the country by 2016, with the official announcement to be made during a press conference at 10.45am (AEST) today. Watch Fast & Furious Cast React in Shock After Learning Car Prices in Singapore Posted: 22 May 2013 04:59 PM PDT We often hear from our many Singapore readers in Carscoops' comments about the ludicrous car prices in the country, but it never gets old. While most of the cast from the Fast and Furious movies is portrayed in the franchise as genuine gearheads, in reality they aren't as near as knowledgeable, which makes their reactions upon learning about car prices in Singapore absolutely…priceless. In a video interview about the sixth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise on Razor TV, journalist John Lui came up with the smart idea of asking the actors to guess the prices of cars in the country. "Loser" Tesla Repays Government Loan in Full, Nine Years Ahead of Schedule Posted: 22 May 2013 04:38 PM PDT Tesla Motors has announced that it has repaid the loan provided by the U.S. Energy Department in full, following today's wire of $451.8 million. The company had also made payments in 2012 and the first quarter of 2013. In a press statement, the EV manufacturer said it is the first and only American car company to date, to have fully repaid the U.S. government. Tesla added that it repaid the loan nine years ahead of schedule, saving taxpayers at least $12 million on the $465 million lent. Read more » |
Young UK Driver Knocks Cyclist Down and then Tweets About It – Police Finds Out Posted: 22 May 2013 03:51 PM PDT We would like to begin this piece by saying that everybody who uses a county's public road system should pay attention at all times, and be aware of their surroundings, regardless of their ride of choice. Drivers of four wheel vehicles blame those who prefer two wheels (motorized or not) for not paying attention and being caught off guard, while the other camp redirects it back and a kind of vicious cycle is formed. However, this latest story from the UK really gives car drivers a bad name, after a young woman from Norfolk used her Twitter account to post about how she hit a cyclist and knocked him down. Spied: Audi Continues Family Facelift with 2014 A8 Luxury Sedan Posted: 22 May 2013 03:12 PM PDT Our spy photographers have captured another glimpse of the facelifted Audi A8, which will likely wear a 2014MY moniker when it goes on sale next year. As is the case with most Audi mid-life cycle updates, the A8 won't change that much, be that in terms of styling or under the sheet-metal. In fact, the exterior revisions will be rather modest, limited to a tweaked front grille, more modern head- and tail-lamp fixtures, and possibly changes to the bumper and mirror designs, along with a fresh assortment of exterior colors and alloy wheel designs. Watch Michael Schumacher Drive a Mercedes F1 Car on the Nordschleife Posted: 22 May 2013 02:32 PM PDT As Michael Schumacher and Mercedes-Benz had promised, the seven-time F1 champion was able to say goodbye to his fans in a very special way – by driving a 2011 Mercedes Formula 1 car on the Nürburgring. Schumacher's laps also marked the first time a Mercedes-Benz Formula 1 car was driven on the Nordschleife since 1954. Read more » |
Peugeot to Shut Down and Sell Meudon Plant near Paris Posted: 22 May 2013 02:10 PM PDT In a sign that Peugeot's troubles are far from over, the French carmaker has announced that it plans to shut down and sell its 30-year-old Meudon plant on the outskirts of Paris. However, the company said none of the plants' 660 employees will lose their jobs. Read more » |
Young Ukrainian Women Experience First World Problems with Lamborghini Gallardo Posted: 22 May 2013 01:36 PM PDT You just can't trust Italian exotic supercars. When they're not catching on fire, they're breaking down…Well, even though we're trying to make a joke out of this situation, there is at least some truth in the above statements, as Lamborghini and Ferrari sports cars were never really designed to be used as daily drivers. Spy Shots: New BMW M4 Coupe Wears Golden Calipers on the 'Ring Posted: 22 May 2013 12:33 PM PDT In contrast to the photoshoped renders of the 2015 BMW M3 sedan we shared with you on Wednesday morning, these shots of the new M4 Coupe show the real car, albeit hidden under yards of camouflage. BMW's high-performance model that will soon replace the M3 Coupe is scheduled for a summer 2014 launch, following the introductions of the plain 4-Series Coupe and Convertible as well as the M3 Sedan later this year. Unique Maserati Quattroporte Shooting Brake from 2009 Up for Auction Posted: 22 May 2013 12:05 PM PDT As far as fast and expensive estate cars are concerned, there are many which fit in the €80,000 to €120,000 price bracket, but most are German, all-wheel drive and usually a tad soulless, as fans of Italian car brands like to say. If you are looking for a fancy estate with a lot of punch, costing about that much, then you are in luck, because something very Italian and exclusive has cropped up, and it's set to go under the hammer on May 25. Minimalist Architect Builds Entire House Around His Beloved Ferrari 512 BBi Posted: 22 May 2013 12:01 PM PDT Not all architects drive Saabs, apparently. Well, it's either that, or the latest video from Petrolicious shows us the exception that proves the rule. Instead of Saabs, California architect Holger Schubert loves Ferraris and is the proud owner of a Ferrari 512i BB, which he views as a design masterpiece (so does Eric Clapton, by the way). We obviously can't argue with that, as one would have to hate Leonardo Fioravanti personally to say that his work on the 512i BB is anything but excellent. A minimalist architect, Schubert decided to create his studio-garage space by making the Ferrari BB 512i its centerpiece. The car shares the same space with Schubert's working area, as he says he's inspired by Ferrari's perfect lines when he's drawing. Read more » |
Inside Sources Say Next Dodge Challenger SRT8 Coming in 2014 with Supercharged V8 Posted: 22 May 2013 11:07 AM PDT Adding to the many rumors about the replacement to the current Dodge Challenger that have been going around for the past year, is a report from Chrysler enthusiast site Allpar and Autonews, that the next SRT8 will come with a supercharged 6.4-liter HEMI V8 called the "Hellcat". While a Chrysler spokesman declined to comment about the existence of the engine, company engineers reportedly confirmed the story to Allpar. The supercharger system is believed to help bring the V8's output closer to the 640hp of the Viper's V10, up from 470hp of the current Challenger SRT8. Read more » |
Ford Increases North American Capacity by 200,000 Units This Year to Meet Demand Posted: 22 May 2013 10:34 AM PDT Ford announced it will add 200,000 units of annual straight-time capacity this year after last year's increase of 400,000 units. Furthermore, the U.S. automaker said it will shorten its summer shutdown from the traditional two weeks to one week for most of its North American assembly plants, which will help increase production by another 40,000 units. SWAT Team Repeatedly Rams Truck Into Arizona Home to Save Hostages Posted: 22 May 2013 10:17 AM PDT When it comes to entering a house where a suspect is living and/or hiding from the law, more often than not, you will see SWAT (Special Weapons And Tactics) teams making use of hand-held battering rams. Once in a while, though, the seriousness of the situation calls for much more drastic measures, as was the recently case in an incident that took place Tuesday morning in Tolleson, Arizona, and which saw SWAT teams using a…truck to repeatedly smash open a house! Infiniti’s Leaf-Based EV Will Most Likely Get Wireless Charging Posted: 22 May 2013 09:47 AM PDT We already know Infiniti is planning on launching its own Leaf-based premium EV, which they previewed with the LE concept shown at the 2012 New York motor show. Now Autocar is sharing additional details on the model, after having talked with company boss Andy Palmer. They say that its future "hinges on a standard process of induction charging being introduced around the world," and it is explained that having cumbersome cables and plugs to fiddle around with contradicts the company's idea of being premium – so they're either making it wirelessly-chargeable or not at all… Read more » |
A 72-Year-Old CEO's 2013 Chrysler 300 is "Amazing" and "Like No Other" Posted: 22 May 2013 09:07 AM PDT Each decade has its own style and flavors, and even though certain fashion trends come back in style from time to time, we think that some things are better left in the past. Of course, that's our opinion and you may freely disagree with it. We're told this 2013 Chrysler 300 sedan that we found on eBay was "custom factory built for a retiring 72 year old entrepreneur" and CEO, who obviously had some fond automotive memories from the 1970s and 1980s. Battle of the Diesel Golfs: Old-Gen 170 PS GTD vs New 150 PS TDI Posted: 22 May 2013 08:30 AM PDT Diesels are a big business in Europe, where every other car drinks from the black pump, not to mention all of the commercial or commercial-derived vehicles. However, the profile of diesel buyers has changed from economy-minded folk with a high tolerance for agricultural engine sounds to mainstream buyers looking for the best possible blend of performance, economy and usability. Modern diesels deliver, and have been doing so for a good few years now - progress is also unstoppable in the automotive industry, and since diesels bring in a lot of cash, a lot of time is spent improving them. Retrosexual EGS Concept Revives Moretti 750 Grand Sport Posted: 22 May 2013 06:25 AM PDT Among the many brands that once made up Italy's exhaustive list of small, independent carmakers, was the Moretti Motor Company. It was founded in 1925 and lived on for almost six decades ceasing production in the mid-1980s. One of its coolest looking and most recognized models was the 750 Grand Sport Berlinetta with a body penned by the great Giovanni Michelotti, who was the designer of the BMW 2002, Standard Triumph, Lancia Aprilia Coupè and many other classic cars. Crash Test Dummy: Driver Reportedly Survives Head-On Crash with Truck Posted: 22 May 2013 05:49 AM PDT Warning: Some viewers may find certain scenes of this video disturbing In traffic, you can ask for forgiveness if you do something dumb, as long as it doesn't really put anybody's safety at risk. You could cut somebody off, or not indicate while changing lanes and others may honk their horn and not think very highly of you, but you won't really be judged too harshly, because there are lots of people doing mindless driving, and people have included it into their daily routine. New 2015 BMW M3 Sedan First Photos? Hold Your Rendered Horses... Posted: 22 May 2013 05:18 AM PDT We were tipped off this morning by a Carscoops reader about a set of purportedly official images showing the production 2015 BMW M3 sedan from Greek web-magazine Drive. We'll admit that the pictures did look real at a first glance but there were also a couple of things that were off and made us suspicious. The first were the similarities of the front-quarter photo with this image of the 3-Series Sedan M Sport right up to the…last numbers of the license plate, and the second, the regular, single slats for the double kidney grilles as opposed to BMW M's new double slat design, as seen on the refreshed M5 and new M6 models.
