Self-Driving Cars By 2020, Says Former GM Exec

By Cornelius Nunev

Self-driving automobiles will be a reality by 2020, according to previous General Motors research and development chief Larry Burns. Before a crowd at the University of Michigan's Robotics Day, Burns envisioned the not-too-distant time when fleets of driverless cars will carry people wherever they need to go, then instantly travel to the next destination to serve someone else.

Less distracted driving

With driverless vehicles, people will be able to do whatever they want in the car. They could take a phone call, play a game or even do business on the trip into work. People do not have to put any time into thinking about driving the car. Distracted driving will not be an issue, and fewer crashes will come. Emissions will even decrease quite a bit, as people will have fewer, lighter automobiles in cities.

Test drives at Google

Thousands of miles have been put into driverless test automobiles on California roads. The Toyota Prius and Audi TT models were used in the experiment done by Google. Google has gotten a ton of attention for these models. The cars do a very good job of watching for dangers, looking at stop lights and staying on the road. They seem to be very effective with radar and video cameras.

Only one accident has reportedly occurred when the driverless system was active, and that appears to have been the fault of a separate, human driver. It is notable that control can be assumed by a human driver at any point during the operation of the self-driving system.

GM attempted driverless cars in 2007

In 2007, GM entered a driverless Chevrolet Tahoe in a 55-mile race sponsored by the U.S. DARPA (DARPA). The race occurred in Victorville, Calif., and the driverless system in the Tahoe (nicknamed "Boss") used familiar systems, from cameras and radar to global positioning satellites. Boss won the race, reports Automotive News.

'Cruise control on steroids'

While Burns maintains that self-driving vehicles won't be fully available until 2020, he believes that many of the necessary benefits will be available on most customer automobiles by 2015. He sees driverless systems working in tandem with adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance and lane-keeping technology to promote both passenger freedom and roadway security.

Leap for insurance

It will be harder to figure out who is at fault in accidents with the new technology. That means a massive stumbling block for the driverless automobiles will be insurance businesses.

Selecting The Best Brooklyn Driving School

By Roseann Hudson

It can be quite challenging to select the appropriate driving schools especially if you would like to save on your auto insurance. You have to take some factors into consideration just like cost and location while ensuring that the quality of instruction you get will not be compromised.

It is necessary for new drivers like those eighteen years of age and younger to take the education courses for drivers in order for them to earn their license. School districts are frequently offering education courses for drivers. On the other hand, countless students go for the best Brooklyn driving school that is authorized and private.

Instruction programs are attended by experienced drivers as well. They do so because a number of insurance companies offer them discounts. When this happens, specific conditions should be known by contacting the insurance agent.

Good education is undeniably significant. The problem is that the budget of the majority is limited. A price range must be set that would be helpful to make the selection process less complicated. Of course, prices may vary. Picking the most affordable one is certainly not a clever thing to do. Poor education is most likely offered by learning environments that are underfunded. The most excellent thing to do is pick one that offers the most excellent quality and best rated without going beyond the budget limit.

Travel expenses will surely affect the attendance's cost. If they are willing to travel, a maximum distance should be set. This will help them narrow down their search. A lot of individuals prefer online driver's education programs, because they can attend these courses from home. These programs do not only offer insurance discounts for adults, but new driver training too. However, hands-on practice is not offered by these programs because online courses replace just the classroom part. In addition, the Department of Motor Vehicles do not acknowledge a lot of these online programs.

You can get in touch with the Brooklyn NY DMV to request for a list of certified schools. An auto insurance agent should be contacted by adult drivers to request for a list of certified schools in case they are required to comply to the requirements of their insurance company. Furthermore, professional organizations can provide them with recommendations when it comes to certified schools just like the Traffic Safety Education Association, Driving School Association of the Americas Incorporated and the AAA club in their locality.

There are factors that you have to take into consideration when making an assessment just like the facility keep-up, class size, instructors and course structure. You can go through consumer review sites, check the websites or check them in person. It is wise to select one that is equipped with modern instruction supplies just like up to date course material, classroom supplies, simulators and modern car models.

Advanced features are vital for the instruction automobiles to have including passenger side brakes if not a supplementary steering wheel that the instructor may use in the event of an emergency. The AAA Exchange said that six lasting to ten week courses are better. This is due to the fact that the instructors handling these have completed a minimum of three professional development programs, making these way more efficient compared to the other programs.

EPA Downgrades BMW 328I Mph

By Ingrid Johnson

Earlier this week, the EPA decided to lower the fuel-economy miles per gallon rating for the 2012 BMW 328i eight-speed automatic. BMW is not very pleased that the regulator decreased the grade after conducting its own battery of tests..

Decreased both highway and city

According to a BMW spokesman, the car maker has been ordered by the EPA to lower the miles per gallon numbers for the 2012 BMW 328i automatic. Only last week, the sedan commanded 24 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. Today, it can only achieve 23 and 33.

EPA tests show different results

The BMW gas mileage decrease happened after the EPA did its own tests on the car. Every car maker does a variety of tests and reports the findings to the EPA. Occasionally, the EPA will just accept the results while other times it runs its own test to figure out if the numbers are really accurate.

Only a few get analyzed

Only about 15 percent of all United States vehicle models actually get a special test done by the EPA, according to Car and Driver magazine.

Very minor changes typically

BMW said it was "surprised" at how low the rating was after the EPA did its own test. Normally, the EPA will only drop a rating just a little bit. It is not typically as severe as BMW's drop was.

Information about BMW 328i

A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder 240 horsepower engine can be found in the 2012 BMW 328i with 260 lb-ft of torque. There are paddle shifters on the steering wheel to operate the eight speed transmission.

EPA testing standards

BMW did the first test in Munich. An official EPA fuel-economy test has to be done with controlled conditions on an indoor track. It goes through five cycles including city, hot city, cold city, highway and aggressive highway. All extra variables are kept constant such as the type of gasoline put to the car for the test.

Keeping the lower rating

The six-speed manual shift version of the 328i kept its 23/24 rating despite the change for the automatic version. BMW cannot ever change this since it will not be able to retest until it has the 2013 model to use.
