Future Cars: Drafting a Modern Light-Duty Pickup Truck for Ford Posted: 21 Jun 2013 05:05 PM PDT Ever since the demise of the much loved Ford Ranger from U.S. soil, fans of the small pickup have been crying out for a replacement. Rather than taking on the Australian designed and developed 'global' T6 Ranger, the Dearborn-based manufacturer decided to pull out of the more compact pickup market altogether in its home market, leaving buyers little choice - go F-Series or go elsewhere. This is all fine and dandy if you don't mind the size of the bigger F-150, however for many that vehicle is far too big for their needs. Ford's argument for not bringing in the global Ranger is that it's too close in size to the F-Series - a point that I tend to agree with. Having climbed over, sat in and prodded the world Ranger in the flesh, it's easy to see why Ford thinks it would cannibalize sales of its No.1 chart-topper. Read more » |
Scary as Hell: Motorbike Rider and Passenger Take to the Air After Hitting Car Posted: 21 Jun 2013 04:35 PM PDT Warning: Some viewers may find the following video disturbing. Running a red light is all the more dangerous if you're on a motorcycle. A car will have no trouble displacing the weight of a motorbike or scooter, and either it or you may be thrown far away, especially if you were really gunning for that light, and you end up going a bit too fast through the intersection. Scoop: Lexus Field Testing New NX Compact Crossover Posted: 21 Jun 2013 04:05 PM PDT We won't blame you for thinking out loud that the prototype model with the zany zebra stripes pictured above and below looks like a Lexus CT 200h riding on a jacked up suspension and crossover-like wheels, because partly, that's what it is. However, it's also a test mule for the Japanese brand's upcoming compact crossover that will take the base right under the RX. Read more » |
Open-Source Off-Road Simulator Called Rigs of Rods Shows the Power of Free Software Posted: 21 Jun 2013 03:40 PM PDT Since we began featuring various racing games and other automotive-related simulations, it is definitely a good idea to mention Rigs of Rods, or RoR, an open source off-roading simulator which has been in the works for many years. In its current state it's stable and playable – previous versions were much buggier than this, so the progress is evident, especially if one has been following its development from the very beginning. Buick Turns 110 This Year, Names 11 Representative Models for Each Decade Posted: 21 Jun 2013 03:07 PM PDT For its 110th anniversary year, Buick has chosen 11 representative models for each decade of its existence. Of course, choosing just one model for a 10-year period can be a difficult job and Buick's choices can stir debate. But I'll have to assume that's exactly what Buick wants, so here are the 11 most representative models as the carmaker sees them. Read more » |
Wald's Vision of What a Darker Audi A7 Sportback Should Look Like Posted: 21 Jun 2013 02:38 PM PDT If you're not feeling Audi's "S" trim line and optional accessories and are seeking a more customized and less "I see that around every corner" kind of look for your A7 Sportback, perhaps you should take Wald International's upcoming tune under consideration. Don't Fall Asleep Watching: C&D Tries to Find the Best "Old People’s Sedan" Posted: 21 Jun 2013 02:15 PM PDT The number of senior drivers with the financial power to buy a car will only go up in the years to come all around the world's more developed countries, but particularly in the US. It is therefore necessary to engineer and develop these vehicles to appeal to older buyers, which make up a large proportion of the total number of buyers. Read more » |
Nissan Reveals Plan to Replace Worn Out Batteries for its Leaf EV Posted: 21 Jun 2013 01:46 PM PDT The battery pack in the Nissan Leaf failed to impress in the hottest of climates, like the US states of Arizona and Texas, where owners reported significant capacity losses. Truth is, though, the batteries are going to eventually fade out anyway - it's what batteries do, and while the process can be slowed down (by keeping them at their ideal temperature), it cannot be stopped. Nissan is fully aware of this, and has announced a program to swap out used batteries for new ones, specifically for the brand's US customers. Set to commence in the first half of 2014, it will come to compliment the warranty already in place for the power storage unit (five years or 60,000 miles for capacity loss and eight years and 100,000 miles for defects). Is Jaguar Planning a 700HP RS Version of the New F-Type Coupe? Posted: 21 Jun 2013 01:21 PM PDT If we are to believe the report from Auto Express, Jaguar will introduce a range-topping F-Type Coupe that will develop no less than 700 horsepower. Compared to Porsche's most powerful 911, the Turbo S, the hot F-Type Coupe would have an extra 147 horsepower! The magazine says it obtained the information from a source working within the company. "We have done an R-S version with over 700bhp that will do over 200mph (322 km/h)– it's going to be insane," the unnamed source said. The report also added that the car would look "fantastic" painted French Racing Blue, the hue reserved for Jaguar's extreme sports cars like the XKR-S. Read more » |
Monkey Displeased With Speeding Ticket, Bites Officer's Hand Posted: 21 Jun 2013 12:46 PM PDT A small monkey sitting behind a driver who had just been pulled over on the road and cited for speeding, showed his discontent with the officer's decision to write him a ticket by jumping up and biting his finger, just as he was about to hand the driver a pen to sign the slip. The incident took place during what originally appeared to be a routine stop in Aransas Pass, Texas on Wednesday. The officer in question was 21-year-old Keith Moore. The rookie cop, who was wearing a sunglass-mounted camera, was kind of confused after the bite and headed back to his sergeant. Read more » |
No Watermarks: Mercedes Scoops Its Own Shots of New AMG SLC that will Fight the Porsche 911 Posted: 21 Jun 2013 12:22 PM PDT Before we tell you about these shots of the new Mercedes-Benz SLC AMG, allow us to start on a different note (feel free to jump to the fourth paragraph if you don't want to read our rant). We often see automakers having special and sometimes even questionable relationships with certain media by providing them with early information and material. This brings us to these photos of a camouflaged Mercedes-Benz SLC AMG that were posted on certain magazine websites, some of which, like the UK's Autocar and Car, placed their watermarks on, evidently to make us believe they are spy shots, when in fact, they were handed over to them by none other than Mercedes itself… Well, when there's a will, there's a way, right? Our spy photo associates at CarPix may have not scooped the SLC AMG, but they were able to get their hands on the unofficially-official pictures in all their high-resolution glory and pass them on to us so we can share them without any watermarks below - if you're in the same line of work or hobby as us, use them as you please… Read more » |

Hear the VTEC Scream in a POV Test of a Honda S2000 Posted: 21 Jun 2013 11:11 AM PDT The Honda S2000 is one of the cars I like most, even though I haven't had the chance to drive one myself - yet. I do know enough about the brand, and have driven other Hondas before, to understand what this car is all about, and even after production ceased in 2009, it didn't stop being the coolest two-seater one could realistically hope to own and run with not a huge amount of cash on hand. Have $19k to Spare? Restored 1983 Audi Ur-Quattro Looking for New Home Posted: 21 Jun 2013 10:37 AM PDT Back in the days when most people knew "Quattro" only as the Italian word for "four", Audi presented a car that would shape the carmaker itself as well as the industry as a whole: the Audi Quattro Coupe that debuted in 1980 at the Geneva Motor Show. Now known as the Ur-Quattro, with Ur roughly translating as "first of its kind" or "the origin" from German, the all-wheel drive sports car that led to the insanity that was the Group B Audi Sport Quattro S1 was produced from 1980 through 1991 (though, U.S. deliveries stopped in 1986). McLaren 12C Rumored to Receive Power Boost Courtesy of P1 Engine Upgrades Posted: 21 Jun 2013 10:02 AM PDT A recent article on Jalopnik is reporting that the McLaren 12C is getting another power increase, to make it even faster than its Italian rival, the Ferrari 458 Italia. Apparently, it will benefit from a number of upgrades operated on the larger P1 hybrid hypercar, which makes 727 hp from what is basically the same engine. Read more » |

Renault Details 2014 F1 1.6-Liter V6 Turbo Unit: 760 HP, 35 Percent More Fuel-Efficient Posted: 21 Jun 2013 08:33 AM PDT Starting with the 2014 season, Formula 1 regulations shift drastically, and the most significant change is the switch from 2.4-liter normally aspirated V8 engines to 1.6-liter direct-injected turbocharged V6 units. Renault is the first F1 engine manufacturer to present the new power unit, officially named Energy F1-2014 to reflect synergies with the fuel-efficient Energy engine used in its road cars. The 1.6-liter V6 engine is fitted with energy recovery systems that increase efficiency by harvesting energy dissipated as heat in the exhaust or brakes. Read more » |
Florida Cops Make Young Mother Shake Her Bra During Traffic Stop Posted: 21 Jun 2013 08:09 AM PDT Just imagine being a woman pulled over to the side of the road for a traffic violation and then being asked to pull up your shirt, flip your bra underwire and shake it a couple of times. It not only sounds, but it actually is humiliating and in any other case, it would be considered sexual harassment, if not worse… This is what happened to Zoe Brugger, a 28-year-old new mother from Florida who was stopped on May 21 by police for driving her car with a burned headlamp. The local cops also discovered that her license was suspended. Read more » |
This is what a BMW 860i Based on the Pininfarina Gran Lusso V12 Could Look Like Posted: 21 Jun 2013 07:05 AM PDT Even though personally, I wouldn't necessarily agree on the use of the 8-Series moniker on such a large and more luxury-orientated coupe like the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso V12 Concept, some officials over in Munich disagree and have hinted that the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2013 study "gives an indication of how such a car [8-Series] might look". While there's no question that the concept model is very close to a production car, it isn't quite there yet, which brings us to this very convincing Photoshop from the creative minds at Autoprojecoes. Celebratory 40th Anniversary Edition Caterham Seven Sells Out Quickly Posted: 21 Jun 2013 06:30 AM PDT Caterham is one of the few British carmakers who have not lost their soul with this whole globalization thing. Scoop: A Bigger and More Mature Mercedes-Benz C-Class Is On Its Way Posted: 21 Jun 2013 05:59 AM PDT The new CLA compact sports saloon (or four-door coupe in marketing talk) is a game changer not only for the segment, but also for one of Mercedes' most popular models, as it creeps up very closely to the current C-Class in terms of pricing and dimensions. Its presence in Benz's range means that the C-Class' successor will try to distance itself from the CLA through a longer and roomier body, a more mature design that draws inspiration from the larger S-Class, higher quality materials and a more refined ride, along, of course, with the rear-wheel drive setup (though, all-wheel drive will be optional). Nissan Unveils ZEOD RC Le Mans Prototype, Confirms It’s All-Electric, Skimps on Other Details Posted: 21 Jun 2013 05:37 AM PDT We knew, thanks to a couple of teasers released by Nissan, that their electrified Le Mans prototype was set to be shown today. However, up until this point, it had not been confirmed what sort of powerplant would motivate this new racing car. Now that photos and information have been released, we realize that more questions are raised than answered, and aside from the confirmation that the ZEOD RC is all-electric, not much information was shared. There's a lot of testing to be done as the car, which will reportedly be able to exceed 300 km/h or 186 mph, will make its debut at next year's edition of the famed French racing venue. Read more » |
Fiat Shows What Would've Occured If the Italians Had Invaded America Instead of the British Posted: 21 Jun 2013 05:38 AM PDT Fiat is promoting the North American launch of the 500L five-seat MPV with a funny commercial that shows "how different America might have been if the Italians had invaded instead of the British." The ad is really funny, even more given the historical inaccuracies in the video. Read more » |
