All-New 2014 Toyota Corolla Gains Fresh Looks, More Space and 7-Speed CVT [45 Pics & Videos] Posted: 06 Jun 2013 09:49 PM PDT The 11th generation of Toyota's best-selling nameplate in the world and second in the U.S. after the Camry ranking 8th overall last year (albeit including sales of the Matrix), which is none other than the 2014 Corolla compact sedan, made its world premiere tonight in Santa Monica, California. Toyota had prepared us for the Corolla's looks with the Furia concept at the Detroit motor show this year, but if you were expecting the same sported up and hunkered down stance, you'll be disappointed. That's not to say the new Corolla isn't more interesting to look at on the outside than the outgoing model, but that doesn't say much, does it now… There are many styling influences from the much larger Avalon, both on the outside, especially up front with five point lower grille and the standard LED headlamps, and even more inside with the dashboard that looks far more premium and interesting than that of the previous generation Corolla. The renewed interior design is matched to a more spacious passenger cabin, courtesy of a 3.93-inch (99.8 mm) longer wheelbase at 106.3-inches (2,700mm), which Toyota says helps offer a rear seat area that is 2.95-inches (75mm) longer than the previous model. 2014 Toyota Corolla Sedan Reveal Set for After 10:00 PM EST [Updated - First Photos] Posted: 06 Jun 2013 09:50 PM PDT Without doubt, the biggest moment in the career of mainstream cars like the Toyota Corolla, is the time of their presentation, which is only natural since few, if any editions of these models, can really touch any chords with true enthusiasts. What these cars do is sell to the masses; that's what they are primarily designed to do and some, like the Corolla, do it better than others. The time for the new generation of the Corolla to shine is almost here, as at 7:00 PM PST, which is 10:00 PM EST, Toyota will begin the presentation of the compact sedan model in Santa Monica, California. Lexus Bids…Another Farewell to the LFA with Video Tribute Posted: 06 Jun 2013 04:50 PM PDT The Lexus LFA, which went out of production in December of last year, will undoubtedly be remembered as a great car. It was partly down to the wacky angular styling, partly down to the unique scream of its V10 engine and finally to the story of how it came to be and the sheer level of engineering which went into its development. 1989 BMW M5 E28 with 400k Miles is a Lifetime Companion that Never Disappointed Its Owner Posted: 06 Jun 2013 04:25 PM PDT Some owners connect with their cars in such a way that they never want to part ways. Take for example this BMW M5 E28 and its owner, Randy Balingit-Hartmann from the latest Petrolicious video. How else could one explain the fact that this man has bought the car new in 1989 and never ever thought about selling it or trading it for something more modern? Read more » |
Spintires: An Interesting Off-Road Simulator Looking for Kickstarter Funding Posted: 06 Jun 2013 04:06 PM PDT Good off-road simulators for the PC are hard to come by, and pretty much all of the good ones are independently developed, or indie games. This means that they are created by teams of enthusiasts who are not pleased with the mainstream offerings and who want to make a game they would want to play, not a game with mass appeal like the big publishers do. Watch the Mercedes SLS AMG Electric Drive Silently Lap the 'Ring in 7:56.2 Posted: 06 Jun 2013 03:42 PM PDT The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive has broken the lap record for electric cars on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, setting a time of 7 minutes and 56.234 seconds. The SLS is also the first EV to lap the famous track in under 8 minutes. The record time has been certified two weeks after the overall win for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 in the Nürburgring 24 Hours. Read more » |
U.S. Government Sells 22 Million GM Shares, Still Owns 13.8% Posted: 06 Jun 2013 03:16 PM PDT The U.S. Treasury sold 22 million GM shares and wants to offload another 30 million shares of GM common stock in a 50-million-share offering that also includes a sale by the UAW union's GM retiree health-care trust, the second-biggest shareholder behind the U.S. government with 160.2 million shares. Russian Taxi Driver Flips His Car While Trying to Flee from a Small Fender Bender Posted: 06 Jun 2013 02:32 PM PDT If this Russian taxi driver isn't under the influence of some hallucinating drug or at least plenty of alcohol, then someone should give him an award for being this year's biggest nitwit behind the wheel. If you just bear with us for a minute, you'll see what we mean. From his dash-cam recorder, we watch the taxicab driver take a turn and bump into a parked, silver Toyota Corolla sedan. No big deal, right? Read more » |
Porsche Delivers 15,000 "Sports Cars" in May, 5,800 of Which Were 911s, Boxsters and Caymans Posted: 06 Jun 2013 01:49 PM PDT Porsche announced on Thursday that it delivered 15,020 vehicles globally last month, 13 percent more than in the same month last year. This brings the total number of sales for the first five months of the year to 67,261 – up 19 percent compared to January – May 2012. What's interesting is that Porsche's release says deliveries reached 15,000 sports cars in May, which in my view, is a clear abuse of the term "sports car". A closer look reveals that a little over a third of these vehicles were from the 911 and Boxster/Cayman ranges, with the rest comprised of Cayenne SUVs and Panamera saloons (or liftbacks, to be precise). New Revealing Spy Shots of Next 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Sedan Posted: 06 Jun 2013 01:14 PM PDT While we don't have any new information to report on the next iteration of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, what we do have to share with you are some very revealing scoop photos of a pre-production model without any camouflage that was nabbed just before the German carmaker's people threw a cover on it. The pictures expose the profile and rear end design of the W205 codenamed C-Class that both look softer and less sculptured than on the current model, with the smooth rear bringing to mind the new S-Class, which shouldn't surprise anyone. MG XPower SV-R Pops Up for Sale in Germany Posted: 06 Jun 2013 12:41 PM PDT The story of the MG XPower SV-R begins with the De Tomaso Biguá, a front-engined V8-powered coupe designed by Marcello Gandini. It was the fruit of a joint effort between De Tomaso Automobili and another small Italian automaker, Qvale. However, just as deliveries of the cars were commencing, the two companies decided they did not want to do business any more, and the latter took over the manufacturing business, but weren't allowed to use the name – it ended up being called the Qvale Mangusta, hinting at its De Tomaso roots. Cheers! Driver Goes for a Beer After Crashing Rare Bugatti T13 Worth Close to Half a Million Dollars Posted: 06 Jun 2013 12:19 PM PDT What would you do if you happened to crash not any car, but a 1924 Bugatti T13 reportedly costing somewhere north of £250,000 (over US$390,000 / €295,000) during a race? Well, we'll have to assume that most people would check to see if they're okay first, and then start pulling their hair upon looking at the damage they caused to such a rare automobile. Read more » |
New Mercedes S-Class Coupe May Keep CL Nameplate, will Premiere in Frankfurt as a Study Posted: 06 Jun 2013 11:17 AM PDT The recently revealed 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will have more versions than ever, with a coupe and convertible to be added to the lineup in 2014. While it has been widely believed that the two-door model will be called the S-Class Coupe, the big luxury coupe may keep its CL name after all, just like its previous generations. This assumption is based on a set of spy photos published by German magazine Auto Motor und Sport where a tag linked to a prototype's keys shows the name CL 127, with 127 being the internal code for the new CL. Back from the Dead: TVR Rights Reportedly Sold to British Interests Posted: 06 Jun 2013 10:13 AM PDT As it turns out, there's a whole lot more behind the message "Never Say Never" that recently appeared on the defunct TVR brand's website, than we originally thought, as the company has reportedly been sold to new owners based in London. Chris Harris Drives the Street-Legal 1.0-Liter EcoBoost Formula Ford Car Posted: 06 Jun 2013 09:09 AM PDT There are many cool cars out there, which are made by small teams, either as side projects of major manufacturers or by small brands as their main model. Chris Harris recently drove two such cars, the Morgan Three Wheeler alongside the Caterham Seven, and now he has done it again, this time behind the wheel of the street-legal Formula Ford racing car, powered by the Blue Oval's appreciated 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost engine. GM Expands Two Year / 24k Mile Free Maintenance to Chevrolet, Buick and GMC Brands Posted: 06 Jun 2013 08:44 AM PDT In a move that could force even more mainstream carmakers to follow the example, General Motors is expanding its free maintenance program for two years or 24,000 miles (38,616 km), whichever one comes first, across its entire lineup, including the Chevrolet, Buick and GMC brands. Lincoln Cuts Free Maintenance in Half Starting with 2014 Models Posted: 06 Jun 2013 08:25 AM PDT Starting with the 2014 model year lineup, Lincoln will reduce its free maintenance program to 2 years/24,000 miles (38,625 km) from a previous 4 years/50,000 miles (80,500 km). Lincoln said in a memo sent to dealers that the revised program "complements short-term 24-month leases". Lincoln said in a statement that the new program is "competitive with other luxury brands," as Jaguar and Volvo also recently cut back their complimentary maintenance programs. Lincoln's new program will only cover a maximum of three service visits, as opposed to eight visits under the old program. Read more » |
Hennessey Gives Us Another Video Look at its F-150 Based VelociRaptor SUV Posted: 06 Jun 2013 07:58 AM PDT Hennessey is hell-bent to keep the fading American motto "bigger is better" alive with creations like the VelociRaptor, which is a Ford F-150 Raptor super crew-cab pick-up truck dressed up as an 8-seater SUV. We've already seen the VelicoRaptor, but Hennessey released a new video of the SUV with the somewhat misleading title "Hennessey VelociRaptor SUV in Action" – and we say misleading as there's not really much action and when there is, we hear a music background and not the V8's roar. Tailgating and Middle Lane Hogging Will be Punished with a £100 On-the-Spot Fine in the UK Posted: 06 Jun 2013 07:34 AM PDT The UK government plans to enforce new fines from July for drivers caught hogging the middle lane and tailgating. Any drivers nabbed doing any of the two offences will be fined £100 on the spot and will have three points deducted from their license. Authorities are hoping the new fines will reduce the number of motorists having to go through the courts. Other changes include £100 ($153) fines for talking on a mobile phone while driving and driving without wearing a seatbelt. Currently, these offences are fined by £60 ($92). Read more » |
Forget About Russia, Look What Happens in L.A. When a Woman Hits a Pedestrian Posted: 06 Jun 2013 07:13 AM PDT Many viewers tend to over-generalize and bash drivers and people misbehaving on the road when incidents take place in foreign lands, but what happens when they occur in their own back yard? Because this event you're about to watch in the video that follows is as crazy, if not worse than what we usually see, and it didn't happen in Russia but the good 'ol US of A. Filmed in Los Angeles during what appears to be an illegal street drift meeting dubbed "Crenshaw Takeover" (see the second and third video), it shows a silver sedan hitting a young lady at a low speed at the crosswalk. The young woman driving the sedan backs up and stops, but before she could do anything (we can't say if she wanted to leave or stop to check out the woman), she was approached by an angry mob. The situation quickly escalates with two young men jumping on her car and breaking the windshield while other people were banging on her windows. Read more » |

TVR’s Home Page Says "Never Say Never" - Return of the Living Dead or Wishful Thinking? Posted: 06 Jun 2013 05:06 AM PDT Famed British sports car maker TVR was never the kind of automaker that had its future assured, and that's why it changed hands several times before finally giving up the ghost in 2012, when its owner, Russian businessman Nikolay Smolenski, announced that it would not be financially-viable for the company to make a new model, and after having split it into several subsidiaries, went bankrupt. Now, however, it could be coming back, and this is not speculation based on "an unnamed inside source," as they actually say it on the site, albeit indirectly. Apparently, it was changed sometime between May 1 and 23, when the current background image was added, reading "Never say never…" Read more » |
