DIY Mechanics 101: How To Change A Tire

By Max Foster

There were a lot of travellers on the highway yesterday and many seemed to be having vehicle troubles. I witnessed a lot of people standing on the side of the road scratching their heads over a flat tire. I guess knowing how to change a tire isn't a prerequisite to starting to drive, but I really think that it should be.

There was this Dodge Caravan that had fallen off of the jack and looked like it was going to slide off the shoulder into the ditch. I had to wonder what had happened while they were fixing that flat tire. The wheel was no where to be seen and the rotor was melting into the road surface.

I saw another vehicle with a flat rear tire in a parkade. The owner had either given up figuring out how to change a tire or wasn't even going to attempt it. He was on his cell phone, I presumed he was calling roadside service to deal with it. That actually looked like a pretty tough situation, his vehicle was sandwiched between two other cars and there wasn't a lot of room to work. Maybe a tow truck was the only option, I don't know.

Can you imagine having a flat tire on your first date and not knowing what to do about it. It was quite late, after 11:00 pm in the parking lot where I ran into a very young couple with a flat tire.

It was after dark and they didn't have that much experience with driving. They both admitted that they had never had a flat tire and did not know how to change a tire. I was happy to help, but I wonder if this shouldn't maybe be a bigger part of driver training these days.

Changing a tire is not difficult to learn. If you read How To Change A Tire On A Car at The Grumpy Mechanic Blog and took the time to read your owners manual, I am sure that anyone could figure it out and even do a mach tire change on their car in less than an hour.

Your best offence is a good defence and when it comes knowing how to change a tire, it would be proactive to figure it out before you need to know how. These things typically don't happen when you aren't in a hurry to get some place else.

Chances are you will never have to worry about a flat tire in dark alley or in a snow storm on a road to nowhere. It does seem like a great skill to have if you are ever in a position where no one else is around to help out though.
