When Should You Not Go With Rental Equipment?

By Halisse Enmma

For most contractors/builders, acquiring the needed construction equipment is often the biggest challenge of any project especially considering today's economic difficulties; it's rare indeed to hear a client saying: "money is no object". This also means they usually look for more practical ways to get all the equipment needed. This is why many rental equipment services today have become very much in demand since these establishments enable contractors to rent equipment for days, weeks or months at a time.

In addition, there are many rental companies these days so finding the equipment you need is not really that much of a difficulty. However, there are others that are not really very enamored with the idea of renting equipment. If so, then when is it a bad idea to rent construction equipment and when should you consider this option?

One of the great things about renting construction equipment is you only need pay for the length of time the equipment will stay on your building site. So you can set your budget accordingly and still get the equipment you need to get your project in the works. Moreover, rental companies will arrange for the equipment to be transported to and from your construction site so logistics is not something you have to worry about, either.

Rental terms are pretty flexible, too so you can get generator rental for days or weeks or months depending on your needs and budget. The time renting becomes impractical is when, for example, you are going to rent a bulldozer or two for more than three months. Meaning, you have to identify the equipment you need and most importantly, the length of time you are going to need the equipment for.

Never rent anything that you will use more than sixty percent of the time; this is the general rule of thumb on construction equipment rentals. You would be surprised at how much renting earth-moving equipment for six months to a year will cost you. For equipment you would need long term, you can look at their site to check out leasing or lease-to-own options that would cost you less.

Carefully discuss lease terms and agreements with the dealers you plan working with to be sure you will end up with the best deals available. You can also carefully compare at least two dealers with each other to be certain you are getting the best deals they can offer.
