New Lexus RC Coupe Detailed in Fresh Batch of Photos

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 07:27 PM PST

Leaving aside the exclusive, exorbitant and extremely limited production LFA and after fiddling around with coupe-convertible models like the second generation SC and IS C for more than a decade, Lexus has finally given in and presented a traditional coupe, one that a wider audience should be able to afford.

We've already provided you with a first taste of the 2015 Lexus RC, and now we can give a more detailed photo look at Lexus' BMW 4-Series and Audi A5 Coupe challenger, after several Japanese sites released a host of new pictures.

Speaking of the 4-Series, Lexus is following a very similar, if not identical path to BMW with the RC, which while based on the IS sedan, sports a more seductive body with different panels. The coupe also has a 70mm (2.8 inches) shorter wheelbase at 2,730mm (107.5 inches), but is both longer and wider by 30mm (1.2 inches) compare to the saloon.

Nevertheless, Lexus Chief Engineer Junichi Furuyama made it a point to tell Motortrend magazine that the RC is a different car than the IS:

"One thing I want to emphasize, the aim of introducing this new model RC is to add a new level of excitement to the existing Lexus lineup," he said. "This is not an IS Coupe, it is the RC, a new coupe in its own right. It is an independent model. It's not a deviated version of the IS so it has its own unique styling and its own unique performance."

As far as powertrains are concerned, Lexus mentioned the RC 350 featuring a 3.5-liter V6 and the RC 300h with a hybrid unit pairing a 2.5-liter inline four to an electric motor, without providing any other information, so we don't know, for example, if both or only one of these units (V6) will be sold in the States. For the record, both type of engines are available in the IS sedan (the hybrid not in the States).

Lexus didn't say it, but we know for a fact that it is preparing a high-performance F version to go against the BMW M4 (see the spy shots here, and our rendering here).

Which is More Fun on the Track: Toyota GT86 or Ferrari F12Berlinetta?

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 05:31 PM PST

This should be a no-brainer; which is more fun to drive, the 730hp V12-powered Ferrari F12Berlinetta or the 197hp 4-cylinder Toyota GT86? Although both are front engined, rear-wheel drive sports cars, they couldn't be more different. One is a very expensive, extreme Italian exotic and the other is an affordable, highly controllable sports coupe.

While in terms of performance the Toyota doesn't stand a chance in front of the Ferrari, when the fun factor is taken into account, the GT86 can bring a big smile on the driver's face. It's a tail-happy machine thanks to its skinny tires, which make it very enjoyable on the track.

But can it compare with the Ferrari? Autocar magazine tested both cars on the Snetterton circuit to find out.

For one thing, the F12Berlinetta is definitely more challenging to drive than the GT86. The Toyota is playful all the time, while the Ferrari is frisky, just as long as the driver remembers the immense power produced by the 6.3-liter V12 and respects it. It's the sort of car that keeps drivers on their toes all the time and does not like giving second chances.

Land Rover May Use Jaguar’s Alloy Platform for New Range Rover Model Larger than Evoque

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 04:58 PM PST

Revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this year, Jaguar's C-X17 crossover concept introduced the brand's new aluminum architecture that will underpin many future Jaguars, beginning with the new sedan due in 2015 that will rival the BMW 3-Series.

While the fate of the C-X17 is not clear yet, it looks like the aluminum platform is very attractive to Jaguar's sister brand Land Rover. The off-road vehicle specialist may use the architecture to build a new model for the Range Rover lineup.

According to a report from Automotive News Europe, which quotes a source familiar with the plan, the new Range Rover would be positioned between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport.

Analysts say the new Range Rover, code-named L560, will make the platform profitable. "This will have higher pricing, higher volumes and higher contribution margins than any of the Jaguar variants," Max Warburton from Bernstein Research wrote in a recent report on Jaguar Land Rover. "We believe JLR product planners expect the L560 to sell up to 80,000 units, making it the most profitable variant by far," he added.

Jaguar Land Rover is investing £1.5 billion (€1.79 billion) to develop the new platform, which analysts say will underpin a production version of the C-X17 crossover as well. For Land Rover, the lightweight platform will bring significant benefits in terms of dynamics, fuel-efficiency and emissions. The report also says the source described the styling of the new Range Rover as "car-like on steroids."

The L560 is expected to have a similar price to the Land Rover Discovery large SUV.

BMW i Range Will Not Get SUV, Says Report

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 04:15 PM PST

BMW's i range currently consists of just two models: the city-oriented i3 and the much sportier profiled i8, and the manufacturer has trademarked all names from i1 to i9, with the stated intention to use all of them. However, as CarAdvice of Australia reports, none of those badges will adorn the tailgate of an SUV, as it has been deemed unfit for the profile of the green sub-brand, and thus one won't be made.

They recently spoke with the manager for the i3 project, Roland Kowalski, who explained that "the thing with the SUVs is nobody, more than 90 per cent, needs four-wheel drive for the city. The SUV trend is only a thing about the space or the roominess."

He argued that the i3 offers just as much interior space as a 3-Series, while sitting on the same wheelbase as a 1-Series hatchback.

Another statement was made by BMW's vice-president of functional integration and driving dynamics, Jos van As, who commented on the naming policy:

"If you start with i1, what do you do if you want to make a smaller car? A 0.5?" he said, completing the idea with "I think they did it to leave space for something if we want to do something different. And that's something we're developing. With the separate i [brand] we take a very deliberate step in one direction if the world is moving towards less emissions, [problems with] petrol availability, etc."

Is this good or bad news? Would you have been intrigued by the prospect of (say) a purpose-built all-electric or range extender SUV with a BMW badge? I know I won't miss it…

Jesse James' Texas Barbeque Take on the Toyota Tundra

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 03:45 PM PST

You may know Jesse James as a reality television personality, but his main job is being the owner and CEO of West Coast Choppers (WCC), which will be heading to the SEMA Show (November 5-8) with a custom concept of the Toyota Tundra truck with a Texas barbecue theme.

Now, you'll probably be wondering, "where the heck is the Texas barbeque theme?", and rightfully so, since nothing of the sort can be seen in the two pictures released by Toyota.

Well, it's all hidden under the Tundra's covered truck bed as James says he drew inspiration from Texas restaurateur Tim Love to build an 8-foot combination KitchenAidÃ’oven and white oak chopping block that extends from the tailgate.

"We didn't want anything silly. We wanted a high-end look to go along with the fully serviceable chef's kitchen," James said. "Nothing is visible until you slide out the stovetop from the back. It came out great."

The exterior of the Toyota truck has been modded with wheel arch extensions, bigger off-road wheels, a Camburg suspension and N-FAB nerf steps.

DTM Driver Andy Priaulx Takes BMW M235i Around Thruxton Racetrack

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 03:23 PM PST

BMW has managed to create a very attractive package, with its all-new M235i coupe, a car that reaches 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.8 seconds and promises to be an engaging drive.

Even DTM driver Andy Priaulx seems to have enjoyed his time behind the (racy looking) wheel of the new pinnacle of the 2-Series range, or at least that's the impression he leaves us with after watching the official promo he was featured in.

The video posted below, will not change our perception of the M235i, for better or worse, because it is not an impartial view. We are pleased, however, to be seeing the car in action, and hearing it at work around the Thruxton racetrack in the UK, even though the engine note sounds a bit flat, and the eight-speed gearbox sometimes seems not to be sure which cog it's supposed to go for (Priaulx could be using the paddles badly, but that's next to impossible given his line of work).

As a package, the M235i should be on your radar if you're looking for a very fast yet still compact coupe, but as with all BMWs, the one you actually want, with all of the goodies selected, will cost a lot of amount of money - it starts at $44,025 in the US.

Elon Musk’s Hyperloop May Materialize through New Company

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 02:59 PM PST

Elon Musk's idea of creating a high-speed transportation system that is neither plane nor train, but both at the same time, sounds good to us, and not an entirely unfeasible prospect – he called it the 'Hyperloop' and it's Mach 1-capable. However, while he still endorses the idea, he won't be a part of the plan to make it come true, because as Fox News reports, he's too busy and others have taken up the challenge.

Patricia Galloway, the first female president of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and former member of the US National Science Board, whose portfolio of completed jobs includes an extension of the Panama canal, is one of the managers behind the newly-created company Hyperloop Transportation Technologies Inc.

She says that despite being a very young corporate entity that just came into being, "the feasibility is done. What we're working on now is moving toward conceptual design."

Her statements bristle with optimism; "It's similar to what the Concorde did for air transport," she said, certain that "This will revolutionize how we transport people from city to city."

She will join forces with Marco Villa, former mission operations director at SpaceX, yet no connection will be made between this fledgling company and Musk's private space agency. They will benefit from the support of other businesses manufacturing and design company GloCal Network Corporation (GLOCAL) and UCLA Architecture and Urban Design's grad program SUPRASTUDIO, along with ANSYS (simulations specialists), whose director of automotive and ground transportation industry, Sandeep Sovani said they've "already virtually tested an initial concept of the Hyperloop."

Money sources for the project are currently not plentiful, but an attempt will be made to try to go the crowdfunding route, but if this does what it says on the tin, they won't have to and investors will be queuing around the corner to get a slice. However, they understandably need to see a working prototype before parting with their cash, and apparently that could be coming "as early as the end of 2014," according to the quoted source article.

Scoop: Spindle Grille 2014 Lexus CT 200h F-Sport Caught Without Camo

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 02:25 PM PST

If last month's brochure scans of the mildly updated 2014 CT 200h weren't convincing enough for you, then perhaps these scoop photos of a camouflage-free prototype of Lexus' compact hybrid will do the job.

The model that was captured on camera by our scoop photographers is the more dynamic looking and handling F-Sport edition, which in its refreshed form, features the Lexus brand's now signature pinched grille flowing above the redesigned bumper with a large plastic honeycomb insert and satin silver trim.

The only other noticeable styling changes on this car are the new alloy wheels and the reworked rear bumper with a different diffuser. Similar cosmetic updates should be applied to the regular CT 200h hatchback.

Whether Lexus has also altered the compact model's interior and hybrid powertrain remains unknown at this time.

Look for the 2014MY to make its debut in one of the international motor shows in the following months.

I Couldn’t Say No to this Ferrari F40 with a Custom Exhaust

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 02:00 PM PST

If you had a Ferrari F40, I bet that you, like me, would not touch it inappropriately in any way, and keep it stock. It's great just the way it is, and with its performance numbers still being comparable to those of modern supercars and a timeless look, why would you?

However, I think there's nothing wrong about swapping out its stock exhaust system for a louder one. It doesn't affect the car in any other way, really, and it's completely reversible, should you decided to sell it on with the aim to pass it on as a complete original. The results speak for themselves, as the video posted below courtesy of YouTube author NM2255.

He just uploaded an onboard and flame-spitting video featuring an F40 with a custom Tubi Style exhaust. This has a significant effect on the sound note, which comes out really clearly in the high quality HD video. It just sounds rawer than stock F40s we've heard before, and it also retains the trademark three pipe design at the back.

New Camaro Z/28 to be Priced More than ZL1; Plus Fresh Photos, Including 2014 1LE and ZL1

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 01:36 PM PST

You can't say we didn't at least try to learn how much the upcoming 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 will cost when it goes on sale during the first quarter of next year; we talked to GM spokesperson Monte Doran who told us the following:

"The Z/28 is NOT available to order now, and we won't have pricing until the end of this year. But I can tell you it will be priced above the ZL1," said Doran.

To put those words into context, the mildly updated 2014 Camaro ZL1 starts at $56,050 in coupe form and from $61,250 with a rag-top over your head, so we're looking at BMW M3 / M4 pricing-territory for the Z/28.

Speaking of the ZL1, the 2014 Camaro's exterior facelift only affected its rear lights, with the front end of the car remaining as is.

"The ZL1 had a mild refresh for 2014 – with new rear taillights and fascia, new optional Recaro seats (for coupes only) and color head-up display," Doran told Carscoops. "It did not get the updated front end of the other 2014 models, as the ZL1 has very unique aero needs for feeding/cooling the supercharger."

If you haven't seen all the new photos of the revised 2014 Camaro that GM has been adding to its media gallery in the months following the debut of the regular coupe and the upcoming Z/28, (for the record, we hadn't), we've placed them all together in our own gallery below the break.

In it, you will find images of the base 323hp 3.6-liter V6, the 426hp 6.2-liter V8 SS in regular and the $3,500 1LE trim that adds a whole bunch of performance goods, the half-refreshed 2014 ZL1 and the Z/28.

Renault Zoe Sales This Year Said to be 10,000 Instead of a Targeted 50,000 Units

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 12:55 PM PST

Sales of the Renault Zoe electric supermini are expected to be way below the automaker's target, with market analyst Inovev estimating 10,000 deliveries or 40,000 less than what Renault is rumored to have set as a goal for 2013.

Although Renault didn't confirm or deny the target of 50,000 sales for the Zoe this year, Inovev told Autonews Europe that the number was provided by multiple high-ranking Renault executives. Earlier this year, Renault-Nissan announced that it would not meet its goal of selling 1.5 million electric vehicles worldwide by 2016. The alliance has not set any new targets yet, a spokesman said.

Renault sold 6,600 Zoes in the first nine months of the year, with the supermini being the brand's best-selling electric vehicle, ahead of the Fluence Z.E. sedan, Kangoo Z.E. small van and Twizy two-seat model.

Inovev believes consumers will become more interested in EVs once there are more public places available to plug in cars. "We think that the Zoe and EVs in general will continue to become a popular alternative to combustion engine cars, especially in urban environments, as charging stations become more available. But that will happen slower than what Renault forecast," Inovev CEO Michel Costes told the news publication.

Analysts at IHS Automotive estimate that Renault will sell 23,434 Zoe EVs in 2014 and 25,843 units in 2015. However, the target of 50,000 sales a year won't be met before 2020.

Hennessey Smokes Out New Entry Level Corvette HPE500

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 12:28 PM PST

We know that the words "base" and "entry-level" have negative connotations, but don't forget it's horsepower-possessed Hennessey Performance that we're talking about here, so even the brand's introductory Corvette Stingray tune has enough power to rattle your insides…

Joining the already announced 600HP, 700HP, 800HP and 1,000HP supercharged programs, is the base HPE500 upgrade, which while keeping the C7's 6.2-liter V8 unit naturally aspirated, it adds 52hp and 58 lb-ft for a total of 507hp at 6,300 rpm and 518 lb-ft of peak torque at 3,800rpm.

Hennessey says that the Corvette Stingray HPE500 completes the 0-60mph (96km/h) sprint in 3.8 seconds (GM has stated that the base C7 does the same in "under 4 seconds") and the quarter mile in just 11.7 seconds with an exit speed of 122mph (196.3 km/h).

The HPE500 package will be limited to 500 units for the 2014 model year.

A Speculative View of the BMW M2 Coupe; What Engine Should it Get?

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 12:02 PM PST

The automotive crowd on internet seems to have warmly embraced the new BMW 2-Series, currently available in coupe form alone, with plenty of skilled hands taking turns on envisioning confirmed or rumored versions of the car, from M2 Convertibles, to regular Cabriolets and M Performance editions.

This design take is for the as-of-yet, unconfirmed, but for a longtime speculated, M2 Coupe, with the artist, Khalil Bouguerra, applying the lessons learned from the forthcoming M4 Coupe and M3 Sedan on the 2-Series body, with bespoke bumpers, skirts, wider fenders, quad tailpipes and a tricked out boot.

If BMW gives the M2 the green light in the near future, what kind of engine do you think it should use?

Some options that quickly come to mind include a high revving and larger displacement four-cylinder (think something like the original M3 E30's 2.3- / 2.5-liter units), a turbocharged 2.0-liter (or with a larger displacement) turbocharged four, and a straight-six turbo – either a modified version of the M235i's 322hp 3.0-liter or perhaps, a smaller displacement variant of the M3/M4's 3.0-liter six.

Whichever engine it chooses, it's almost a given that it will produce much less power than the 424hp (430PS) unit in the M4 and M3. Perhaps BMW should place the emphasis elsewhere creating a limited production CSL version of sorts for the M2, with a smaller displacement engine (preferably a four-cylinder) that takes advantage of significant weight saving measures to create a driver's handling delight. What do you say?

ABT Spices Up Audi RS6 Avant to the Tune of 700 PS Creating the 'Über-Kombi'

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 11:35 AM PST

If you want your new 2013 Audi RS6 Avant to perfrom better than it already does (not that you'd need to, really), and have subtle visual tweaks to hint at it, then VW Group tuner ABT Sportsline is one of the best bets. Crazy-powerful Audis are their most extreme products, and this new RS6, with its 700 PS (690 hp) tuned twin-turbo V8 is close to the top of the pile.

Originally putting out 560 PS (552 hp), the tuner says the boost in power and torque bestows the uber-fast estate with 25 percent better overall performance. Speaking of torque, that is obviously important in achieving the stated figures, and it's up too, from the factory standard 700 Nm (516 lb-ft), to a claimed 880 Nm (695 lb-ft).

Acceleration times from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) are therefore slashed by half a second, from the factory stated 3.9 seconds to 3.5. Impressively, this rather boxy-looking estate will keep accelerating all the way to 320 km/h (200 mph).

Visually, other than the noticeable 20- or 22-inch rims that are unique to the ABT-tuned model, lowered suspension and carbon mirror caps, it's just as in-your-face as any other RS6. Spot the mods in the gallery below.

Pink Feathered Kia Driver Falls Asleep, Takes Another Car Down Into a Crazy Rollover

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 11:09 AM PST

Pink feather like decorative accents on door handles might make some of us take notice for humorous purposes, but they won't make other drivers more aware of you when you fall asleep behind the wheel.

This severe accident took place in South Korea last week when the driver of the aforementioned black Kia Optima seemingly dozed off with his vehicle veering to the right and hitting the concrete barrier that sent it across the other way before smashing into a silver sedan.

As a result of the high speed contact, both cars rolled over. Amazingly, the author of the video stated that, despite the severity of the accident, no one was seriously injured.

Take a look at the incident for yourself in the video below.

GM Recalls 2013 and 2014MY Camaros Over Warning Labels That Peel Off

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 10:33 AM PST

And yes, we have the first recall for the only just released into the U.S. market 2014 Chevrolet Camaro facelift. To be precise, GM's recall involves both the pre-facelift 2013 and the newer 2014MY Camaro coupes manufactured from June 9, 2013, through September 6, 2013, over some…free-spirited airbag warning labels.

In a filing to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), GM said:

"In the affected vehicles, the required air bag warning label on the sun visor may peel off. If the air bag warning label detaches from the visor, the driver and front seat passenger may not be warned of the risks of air bag deployment, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash."

Not that you can't see it for yourself, but since we do live in the age of lawyers and fine print, GM said that it will "notify owners, and instruct owners how to inspect the visor sticker" with dealers to replace the sun visor as necessary, naturally, free of charge.

Marchionne Changes Tune on U.S. Fiat Dealers Getting Alfa 4C

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 10:03 AM PST

When Harald Wester, boss of Fiat's Alfa Romeo and Maserati units told reporters in September that the new Alfa 4C mid-engine sports car would likely be sold in the U.S. through Maserati's 68-strong dealer network alone instead of Fiat's 210 showrooms as well as originally suggested, he dealt a strong blow to the latter, even though they had never received a letter of intent or an outright promise from Chrysler.

Now, Chrysler-Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has come out to address these concerns by saying the plan is "the best performing Fiat dealers will be the ones that will be entitled to have a crack at Alfa Romeo distribution," according to an Autonews report.

The issue at hand isn't as much about the 4C itself, of which only about 1,000 units are earmarked for the States, as it is for future products of Alfa and their distribution rights in the country.

For now, Fiat's U.S. dealers will have to make ends meet with whatever products they have.

"Even if we get Alfa tomorrow, we're not going to get any volume for at least two years," Gary Brown, chairman of the Chrysler National Dealer Council and a Fiat dealer on Long Island told Autonews. "Our game plan as Fiat dealers is to figure out how to make due with the product that we have and hopefully, there will be more Fiat product on the way in the next few years."

AE Drives All-New i10, Says it's Hyundai's Best Car Ever

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 10:01 AM PST

The all-new Hyundai i10 city car is a model that the Koreans are very optimistic about, as it is the first of 22 new models that will be rolled out in Europe by 2017.

Redesigned from the ground up, the new entry-level Hyundai is bigger than its predecessor, features higher quality materials and a more attractive design both inside and out – especially the top-spec model UK magazine AutoExpress tested in this video review.

But what is the new Hyundai i10 like to drive? The reviewer found the car to be a lot more refined than the outgoing model, quieter inside and fun to sit inside. The ride is described as comfortable and very similar to what a bigger car feels like.

The reviewer also noted the car's generous equipment and the higher quality materials used in the cabin - especially those that the driver touches the most often. However, everything else is made from hard plastic.

He fails to mention anything about the engine (an 86hp (87PS) 1.2-liter four-cylinder petrol unit), though, so I assume there wasn't much worth talking about..

Scroll down to watch the video for yourself.

This Is Indeed The Refreshed 2014 Nissan Patrol SUV, Debuts at Dubai Show

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 11:18 AM PST

Over the weekend, we shared some spy photos of what was rumored to be the visually updated 2014 Nissan Patrol. Now we can confirm the news and show you a couple more revealing pictures of the full-size SUV that will make its grand premiere tomorrow at the opening day of the 2013 Dubai Motor Show (November 5 to 9).

These fresh pictures, which come to us courtesy of DriveArabia and Nissan-Arabia, divulge the redesigned front end of the 2014 Patrol featuring new LED headlamps positioned next to a revised front grille and re-shaped bumper, while the other changes include new tail lamps, a tan leather seat option with wood-trimmed steering wheel and alloy wheel designs.

It is reported that Nissan left the Patrol's V8 powertrains remain untouched, but that it added a new special edition version dubbed "Black" (pictured below) with a factory-matte black finish and grille, red leather seats and chrome wheels, which will be limited to 200 units for the Middle East.

Thanks to Saif for the tip!

Chevrolet Reveals its Pimped Trucks for SEMA, Including New 2015 Tahoe and Suburban

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 08:29 AM PST

Chevrolet has blown the covers off its concept trucks and SUVs on the eve of the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Besides the high-performance Silverado Cheyenne concept, the GM brand has brought five other Silverado-based custom concepts, as well as two studies based on the Tahoe SUV and one based on the Suburban.

The 2015 Chevrolet Suburban Half-Pipe Concept targets winter sports' fans and is equipped to haul adventurers and all their ski and snowboard gear to the slopes. The SUV is equipped with Chevrolet Accessories' roof rack and crossbars to mount skis and other equipment along with Chevrolet Accessories 22-inch wheels and center caps for a more distinctive appearance. The interior features a Blu-ray-based rear-seat entertainment system and leather-trimmed seats.

Tahoe Black conceptThe Tahoe Black concept is an aggressive take on the full-size SUV thanks to the lowered stance, all-black profile and a custom aero-style body package. The blacked-out exterior trim, Chevrolet Accessories 22-inch wheels custom-painted dark gray, tinted headlamps and tinted windows all around also contribute to the Tahoe's sinister look. On the inside, the Tahoe is trimmed in black leather with Carbon Flash Metallic trim accents.

There's also the Tahoe Police concept that offers a preview of how the future police version of the new Tahoe could look like. The SUV includes the Tahoe 9C1 police package's standard equipment, including a 5.3L V-8 engine rated at 355 horsepower, a six-speed automatic transmission, 17-inch steel wheels, police-specific suspension and auxiliary battery for emergency equipment.

Brad Paisley Signature SilveradoThe Brad Paisley Signature Silverado is a signature-edition concept dedicated to country music star Brad Paisley, who collaborated with Chevrolet designers on the truck. The custom Silverado features a custom paint job, high-performance accents, a lowered stance and an amped-up sound system. Paisley's logo is featured on the paint scheme, while performance upgrades include a hood extractor vent, tailgate aero lip and Borla exhaust system. On the inside, there's a rear-seat entertainment system and a Kicker subwoofer.

Another Silverado dedicated to a celebrity is the Tony Stewart Silverado concept. The NASCAR driver and team owner collaborated on the design of the custom truck, which features Smoke graphics that symbolize his racing spirit, a Dark Tarnished Silver color, tinted headlights and taillights as well as several Chevrolet Accessories components. These are a tonneau cover, four-inch chrome assist steps and 22-inch wheels with a custom finish. The headrests feature Stewart's signature.

The Silverado Volunteer Firefighter concept is not new, as it was previewed in September. The concept shows how the new Silverado can be adapted for fire departments. The Silverado Double Cab equipped with the Z71 Off-Road suspension features a series of rescue equipment and offers room for personal gear such as a turnout coat and pants, firefighter helmet, air pack and gloves. Outfitting includes tools and safety equipment needed in a support vehicle.

Silverado Black Ops ConceptAlso revealed in September, the Silverado Black Ops concept includes features designed to offer support in an emergency – including custom-fabricated lower body armor and a lockable, bed-mounted Truck Vault storage unit. It holds a solar power pack, a pair of gas masks, gloves, military first aid kit, folding shovel and rope, among many others.

Chevrolet's 2013 SEMA lineup also includes the Silverado HD Dually tow vehicle, which demonstrates the hauling capability of the all-new 2015 Silverado HD. The crew cab concept is shown in Chevrolet's SEMA Show display hitched to a custom trailer holding a COPO Camaro race car and with a new COPO racing engine and transmission in the bed.

Toyota Truck Recovery Goes from Bad to "Holy F@%$" Faster Than You Can Say Down Under

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 08:01 AM PST

The last thing you want or need when you're out in the wild "more than six hours away from the nearest help" is to have both of your main transportation means disabled, which is precisely what happened to a trio of Australians filming for an upcoming episode of the 'All 4 Adventures' television show on 7TWO.

Then again, since we are talking about television, perhaps this is the best thing that could have happened (ratings-wise, of course, of course) to presenters Jason Andrews and Simon Anderson, and to a lesser extent, Al the cameraman.

When the first Toyota truck got itself into a muddy and sticky situation, it wasn't that bad, but things took a turn for the worse when the tide starting coming in, and even more so, when the other Toyota that was doing the pulling…turned over. Watch the NSFW video below.

Chevrolet's High-Performance Silverado Cheyenne Concept is the Z/28 of Trucks

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 07:42 AM PST

Another day, another Chevrolet concept for the SEMA Show. The Silverado Cheyenne study is a performance-oriented version of the 2014 Silverado regular cab that combines a 420hp 6.2-liter V8 engine with weight-saving measures to make the truck go faster.

The custom concept features a lowered ride height, a rear stabilizer bar and Brembo carbon ceramic brakes. The bumpers, tailgate and inner cargo box are made from carbon fiber, shaving approximately 200 pounds (91 kg) from the truck's base curb weight of 4,503 pounds (2,042 kg) – corresponding to a 5.3L-equipped Silverado regular cab with a 6'6" box.

The front bumper includes race-inspired ground effects styling, as do the side sills, while at the rear the tailgate incorporates a spoiler. Another sporty add-on is the Camaro Z/28-inspired extractor vent on the hood.

The Silverado Cheyenne is also fitted with Brembo carbon ceramic brakes sourced from the Camaro Z/28, as well as charcoal-painted 19-inch Camaro Z/28 aluminum wheels and high-performance tires.

To make it as light as possible, Chevrolet removed the trailer hitch, spare tire, interior center console and some of the sound-deadening material. The truck also features a lightweight aluminum driveshaft and composite rear leaf springs.

The concept's 6.2-liter V8 engine is rated at 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft (623 Nm) of torque – that's 65 hp and 77 lb-ft (104 Nm) more than the production Silverado 5.3L V8. The unit is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with hill descent control.

On the inside, the Cheyenne brings Recaro sport seats and a flat-bottom steering wheel, similar to the steering wheel from the Camaro ZL1. Chevrolet says the Cheyenne is only a concept right now, "but we are continually exploring new ways to give Silverado customers more." I'm sure many Silverado fans wouldn't mind if Chevrolet produced it exactly like this.

VW Tunes New E88 Turbo Engine-Powered Jetta Sedans and Golf Mk7 for SEMA

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 07:22 AM PST

This week's 2013 SEMA Show in Las Vegas will see Volkswagen bringing tuned Jetta sedans fitted with the brand's all-new 1.8-liter turbocharged Gen 3 EA888 engine that replaces the venerable 2.5-liter inline five and the latest version of the 2.0-liter TFSI, along with the seventh generation of the Golf hatchback.

The first Jetta study is the 425-horsepower "Racer's Dream in Black and White" built in collaboration with FMS Automotive. It uses VW's newer 2.0-liter TFSI that in stock form, makes 210hp or 10hp more over the Gen 2 unit.

FMS Automotive tapped the APR for their Stage 3+ Turbo Kit to help boost output to 425HP, while also upgrading the suspension (H&R kit), wheels (19-inch TSW Jerez wrapped in Nitto rubber) and brakes (Brembo with a set of performance four-piston calipers and cross-drilled rotors). A matte white finish for the body that contrasts against gloss black accents, an aero package that includes Golf R skirts, and a sported up interior complete the list.

The second Jetta model is the "Helios Special Edition Jetta GLI Tribute" that uses VW's all-new 1.8-liter turbo engine. As the name points out, the styling details and paint scheme pay homage to VW's original Helios Special Edition from the late 1980s . Notable upgrades include a VW-designed aero package, Golf R brake calipers custom painted with the "Helios" logo, 19-inch VW Motorsports wheels coated in ceramic gunmetal gray and wrapped with Nitto Invo 235/35 ZR-rated tires, and new Recaro seats inside.

VW hasn't released any photos of the H&R Golf Mk7 study but it did mention that the car will feature a sports suspension, Brembo brakes, 19-inch rims in 225/35ZR tires, a VW Accessories body styling kit and a sports exhaust with center tailpipes.

Chevrolet's SEMA Corvette Stingray, Camaro and SS Concepts

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 06:44 AM PST

There are so many Chevrolet concepts heading to the Las Vegas Strip this week for the SEMA motor show that GM has opted to issue separate releases depending on the category they belong to. Today and following the announcements on Chevy's truck and passenger car studies, the bow and tie brand is affording us a first look at its sports and performance models.

Naturally, the spotlight is on the new 2014 Corvette Stingray that will be represented by three editions, starting with the 460hp Corvette Stingray Gran Turismo concept built to commemorate the game's 15th anniversary.

Next up is the Corvette Stingray Convertible Atlantic concept with styling enhancements, while the third model is the Corvette Stingray Coupe Pacific concept wearing a number of Chevrolet accessories.

The other cars are the Jeff Gordon SS styling study and no less than six Camaro models, all based on the facelifted version, including the Spring Special Edition that will enter production next year.

"From the all-new Corvette Stingray to the new Camaro Z/28 and SS performance sedan, Chevrolet is America's choice for performance cars. Our new lineup of racing-influenced models gives customers more choices for exciting driving experiences," said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. "It's our most diverse range of performance-car choices in nearly 20 years."

For more details on the SEMA show models, roll down for GM's press blurb.

[From GM Press Release]

Jeff Gordon SS performance sedan concept
With input from the No. 24 driver himself, Chevrolet designers restyled the all-new SS to reflect Gordon's style and the performance credentials of the brand's all-new, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan. A satin exterior finish lends an all-business appearance to the car, complemented with No. 24 graphics, custom-finished 20-inch wheels, a carbon fiber rear spoiler and a custom front grille.

The car casts a more aggressive stance with a lowered suspension. The Gordon SS concept features high-performance brakes and a Borla performance exhaust system. The interior is re-trimmed with perforated suede seat inserts and embroidered headrests and a racing-style flat-bottom steering wheel and Chevrolet Accessories pedal kit.

Under the hood beats the small-block heart of all SS production models: The LS3 6.2L V-8 rated at 415 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. It is backed by a six-speed automatic transmission with TAPShift.

Corvette Stingray Gran Turismo® concept
A special-edition Corvette Stingray concept is revving to go in the new Sony PlayStation® 3 game Gran Turismo 6 commemorating the game's 15th anniversary – and Chevrolet has built a real version of the virtual racing winner. Its distinctive exterior and interior elements include:

  • Custom exterior paint scheme
  • Yellow-tinted headlamps
  • Carbon fiber rear wing
  • Custom carbon fiber hood and extractor design
  • Ground effects kit with carbon fiber rockers and front splitter
  • Custom exhaust tips
  • Racing-style front tow hook
  • Custom front grille
  • Custom front fender and rear quarter vents
  • Custom-trimmed Competition Sport seats
  • Driver and passenger racing harnesses
  • Custom flat-bottom steering wheel
  • Leather-wrapped safety belt bar and rear braces.

Like all 2014 Corvette Stingray models, the Gran Turismo® concept is powered by the new LT1 6.2L V-8, which uses direct injection, Active Fuel Management and continuously variable valve timing to produce 460 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque (with the available performance exhaust) – enabling EPA-estimated 29 mpg on the highway. The concept vehicle is also equipped with the standard seven-speed manual transmission.

Corvette Stingray Convertible Atlantic concept One of a pair of right- and left-coast-themed concepts, this Blade Silver Convertible model represents the Atlantic side, with sophisticated styling enhancements resembling the details and refinement of a private jet. The exterior wears new Carbon Flash Metallic front splitter, rocker extensions and rear lower diffuser, along with Fusion Gray headlamp housings and hood accents. It is trimmed with a sueded-wrapped interior package.

This East Coast cruiser also wears a number of Chevrolet Accessories available to all 2014 Corvette Stingray customers, including:

  • Chrome five-spoke wheels – 19 x 8.5-inches in front and 20 x 10-inches in the rear
  • Wheel center caps with the Stingray script
  • Under-hood liner with the Stingray logo
  • Carbon Flash Metallic rear license plate holder
  • Molded splash guards
  • Windscreen mounted behind the seats
  • Custom luggage
  • Premium carpet floor mats
  • Sill plates
  • Embroidered center armrest with the Stingray logo.

For effortless driving and performance, the Atlantic concept features an LT1 engine with a six-speed automatic.

Corvette Stingray Coupe Pacific concept Influenced by West Coast culture, here racing-influenced performance and appearance matter this track-inspired Torch Red Corvette Stingray Z51 Coupe's design is purposeful and compelling.

The high-performance hue is complemented by a carbon fiber hood and a visible carbon-fiber weave on the removable roof panel, as well as a satin-black front splitter and rocker extensions. The Z51 rear spoiler is painted Carbon Flash Metallic with a Carbon Flash graphics package. The interior features a carbon fiber trim kit, along with the available Competition Sport seats and a flat-bottom steering wheel with a carbon fiber finish.

Because it's a Corvette Stingray Z51, the LT1 engine features a dry-sump oiling system, the cooling and brake systems are enhanced and the transaxle features an electronic limited-slip differential. Even the gearing in the seven-speed manual transmission is unique.

Like the Atlantic concept, the left-coast Corvette concept wears a number of Chevrolet Accessories, including distinctive satin black aluminum wheels with a red accent stripe (19 x 8.5-inch in front/20 x 10-inch in the rear).

COPO Camaro Chevrolet Performance's COPO Camaro program returns for 2014 with another limited run of factory-produced race cars and a pair of new racing engine choices.  The COPO exclusives will carry the distinctive, updated styling of the 2014 Camaro lineup, including new front and rear fascias.

Each COPO Camaro race car is built by hand starting with hardware from the Oshawa, Ontario assembly plant that manufactures regular-production Camaros. Each production car is fitted with an NHRA-approved roll cage and other safety equipment, along with racing chassis and suspension components – including a unique solid rear axle system in place of a regular-production Camaro's independent rear axle.

The new LS-based racing engines include a revised version of the naturally aspirated 427 engine and supercharged version of the 350 engine introduced in 2013. It will feature a 2.9L Whipple screw-type compressor. Naturally aspirated 350 and 396 engines are also available. The car displayed at the SEMA Show features the supercharged 350.

Serial number 1 of the limited-production 2014 run will be auctioned by Chevrolet Performance at Barrett-Jackson's annual January event in Scottsdale, Ariz. Proceeds will benefit the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans, an organization dedicated to helping wounded veterans participate in marathons and share their success within a supportive community and their families.

2014 Camaro Z/28 There was no need to modify the all-new 2014 Camaro Z/28 for the SEMA Show – it's already a comprehensively engineered car that recently lapped Germany's challenging Nürburgring road course in 7:37.40 – on wet track conditions. It was four seconds faster than the Camaro ZL1, and beats published times for the Porsche 911 Carrera S and the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640.

In terms of lap times, the Z/28's improved speed comes from three areas:

  • Increased grip: The Z/28 is capable of 1.08 g in cornering acceleration, due to comprehensive chassis revisions
  • Increased stopping power: The Z/28 features Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes capable of 1.5 g in deceleration, and consistent brake feel lap after lap
  • Reduced curb weight: The naturally aspirated Z/28 weighs 300 pounds less than the supercharged Camaro ZL1, with changes ranging from lightweight wheels to thinner rear-window glass.

The heart of the Z/28 is the 7.0L LS7 engine. The LS7 uses lightweight, racing-proven, high-performance components, such as titanium intake valves and connecting rods, CNC-ported aluminum cylinder heads and a forged-steel crankshaft to help produce an SAE-certified 505 horsepower and 481 lb-ft of torque. Air-conditioning is available, but only as an option.

The Z/28 goes on sale next spring.

Chevrolet Performance Garage Camaro Serious performance enthusiasts will appreciate the combination of Chevrolet Performance parts and Chevrolet Accessories used to create the Garage Camaro concept, which is based on the production Camaro SS. It's a track-oriented car, incorporating performance and suspension components from the all-new Z/28 – and a few from the ZL1.

The exterior is enhanced with a ground effects package, Chevrolet Accessories rear spoiler and grille, RS headlamps and taillamps, blacked-out mirrors and rear diffuser, and Chevrolet Accessories satin-black 10-spoke Track Pack wheels. "Chevrolet Performance" graphics adorn the rockers and windshield header.

Brakes and a short-throw shifter from the Camaro ZL1 come straight out of the Chevrolet Performance catalog and are available through Chevrolet dealers, while the following Z/28 parts are being evaluated by Chevrolet Performance for future release:

  • "Shorty" exhaust headers and 2.75-inch exhaust system
  • Front ride/handling links
  • Rear upper control arms
  • Stabilizer bars
  • Helical differential with internal cooling system
  • Brake ducts

  • Front ride link
  • Rear upper control arms
  • Shorty exhaust headers
  • Helical differential with internal cooling system
  • DSSV dampers
  • Brake ducts
  • Stabilizer bars.

Chevrolet Performance Camaro V-6 concept With 323 horsepower from its direct-injected, DOHC V-6, the Camaro doesn't need a V-8 to be considered a performance car, and this Chevrolet Performance concept proves it with enhancements available through Chevrolet dealers that give it track-ready reflexes, including:

  • Brembo brake kit from the Camaro SS
  • Camaro 1LE suspension kit
  • Camaro 1LE strut tower brace
  • Borla performance exhaust system
  • 20-inch black wheels (45th anniversary design).

The car also wears Z/28 rear upper control arms, which are being evaluated for the Chevrolet Performance catalog.

Exterior and interior appearance accessories lend a more athletic aesthetic to this more-capable Camaro. The exterior features a Chevrolet Accessories grille, front splitter and rear spoiler, along with "Chevrolet Performance" graphics. Inside, it is ready for the road course or street, with:

  • Chevrolet Accessories premium carpet floor mats
  • Chevrolet Accessories ambient lighting kit

  • Blue-accent leather-appointed interior with blue stitching
  • White interior trim kit with Blue Ray stripe
  • Chevrolet Accessories floor mats (black with silver Camaro logo).

LT models include the direct-injected, 323-horsepower V-6 engine, while SS models include a 6.2L V-8 rated at 426 horsepower when paired with the six-speed manual transmission or 400 horses with the available six-speed automatic.

In the Market for a Used Porsche 911 (997) GT3? This Video Has all you Need to Know

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 06:25 AM PST

Now that the new Porsche (991) 911 has been around for a while, we've already seen its GT3 derivative, and it is just as hot as we were expecting it to be, frankly…

However, it's appearance does not in any way detract from the appeal of the previous-gen car (the 997), originally launched in GT3 trim in 2006. If you're in the market to get one, then scroll down because it's all detailed in the AutoTrader video posted after the break.

The 997 GT3 (RS or not), in any type of spec and engine option, is considered to be one of the most focused road-going cars you can buy. One of the reasons why it was made was so that Porsche could homologate parts for racing use, parts that it shares with the track-only cars. Those who have had a go in one say it definitely feels it, and that seems to be the consensus among the plethora of video reviews dedicated to praising it.

One in good condition will still cost over $100,000, even now, though most have very few miles on them and it's the kind of unique car that gets bought by an enthusiast who will cherish it – the 2006-2007 3.6-liter 415 hp cars are obviously the cheapest. We added three links to ones that are for sale now, for reference: eBay Link 1, eBay Link 2, and mobile.de Link 1.
