Improvements That Every Mud Bogging Truck Needs

By Steven Wayne

Beginners start with just a basic stock truck, but it does not take long for the upgrades to start happening, stock just will not be good enough any longer. There are many areas of a truck that can be boosted to offer more performance and power.

There are many types of mud bogs but power and performance is the answer to all of them.

The air intake is a good place to start. First of all it should always be as clean as possible. There are air filters that are made to withstand the harsh conditions of offroad.

A snorkel system helps keep the air free of debris as it raises the air intake. This also keeps the air free of power robbing moisture. There are kits made in the aftermarket for most trucks or one can be fashioned from elbows and pipe from an exhaust shop.

An upgrade to the chip system is often needed as the vehicles come off the assembly line fueled very conservatively. There are chips offered with more power in mind and the upgrades can be done in about 15 minutes by anyone with some basic knowledge of mechanics.

The tire area gets a lot of attention as the higher the truck is the more clearance it will have, and it just makes the truck look better. If it is a truck that is mostly used for off road driving then a more aggresive tread pattern can be used. If it is a vehicle that is used on road conditions as well a more conservative pattern may be needed, some of the pattern affect the comfort of the ride on road.

Dunlop, Pirelli, Goodyear, and Bridgestone all offer offroad tires just to name a few.

Some of the larger tires may require a lift kit, this can affect stability of the vehicle so try not to go overboard. Lift kits are not just for show they do provide a service. The foundation for many other upgrades such as tire or exhaust mods begin with a lift kit to allow room. The extra clearance that they provide does help produce a smoother ride.

The exhaust system is a popular upgrade as a larger exhaust system produces more power from the engine. Upgrading to a stainless steel system can be more expensive at first but the cost to maintain over time can produce savings. The stainless steel tips extending out the back of the vehicle are visually more pleasing.
