Considerations When Purchasing A Used Toyota

By Crystal Maloney

Toyotas are a brand that hold their value well. They do so because they have several features that make them long-lasting cars, which means people are more likely to want to buy a used Toyota. When looking for that perfect car, it is important to be smart about your decision.

Although it certainly is not the case with every one out there, Toyotas tend to last a long time without needing major repairs. They also tend to get many miles out of the same engine. These features make them popular resale vehicles, and their purchase prices may be higher than those of vehicles with comparable miles or age that are not the same brand.

People usually purchase pre-owned vehicles from one of two sources - a dealer and other private parties. Dealers sell two types of cars - those they have taken in as trade that are generally sold as-is, and those that have been factory certified, repaired as necessary, and come with a new warranty.

Buying a certified, pre-owned car is the best way to make sure you don't get any nasty surprises, but it is also the most expensive option. These cars have been checked by a mechanic, fixed where necessary, and come complete with a new warranty. Buying a car from a private party can be a lot cheaper, but it is also a bit of a gamble, depending on how honest the seller is.

Getting a car from a private party means taking it as-is. This doesn't mean that you have to shell out good money for a vehicle that doesn't work right when you first buy it, however. Get a trusted mechanic to look it over for you before you buy it. A seller who doesn't agree to this (on your dime, of course) is probably hiding something.

Making a smart purchase of a used Toyota can be a great decision. Because these cars have long lives, they often run for many years even when purchased as pre-owned. You can save money and the environment and still drive a great, reliable vehicle when you choose a Toyota.
