If one detects some certain high gas levels around the area, then do not go inside first. Ventilate the area and make sure that there are no more gases before actually going in.

Open manholes are not easy to spot and if one does not see one, then there is the danger of falling into one. So in order to avoid any accidents, make sure to put up signs that would warn people.
