Useful Information About The Aerospace Company Honeywell Avionics

By Krystal Branch

Honeywell International is a corporation that manufactures aircraft parts and engines. It also produces auxiliary power units and other aviation equipment. Headquartered in Arizona, the company generates billions of dollars in revenue each year. Much of this revenue also comes from defense and commercial contacts as well. If you are interested in learning about Honeywell avionics, then there is plenty of information available about the company.

The company has a long history in the aviation business. They had a great boom during the Second World War, equipping bomber planes with certain avionics parts. They also invented the auto-pilot system during this time. This autopilot technology was originally kept a secret until 1943, when German forces began salvaging downed bomber planes. When the war ended the company began to focus on creating peacetime equipment. Today, they produce space equipment, auxiliary power units and turbine engines, among other things.

The company eventually turned its attention to commercial avionics. In 1958, they developed one of their earliest technologies, the ring laser gyroscope. They also developed the laser inertial navigation system, which helps to navigate planes. The flight control systems they designed helps to measure the altitude, position and velocity of an aircraft.

In the 1950s, the company technicians began to experiment with a new device they called the electrically suspended gyroscope. This was a rotating ball that was suspended in a shell that used electrical fields. There was very little wear and tear on the device, since there was no contact between the materials. The company later acquired Sperry Aerospace, which allowed them to integrate flight controls and navigation systems in the cockpit. This helped the company to grow exponentially over the next several decades.

When the Second World War began many turbochargers were manually controlled and used mechanical energy to force air from the engine into the intake manifold. Today most chargers are exhaust-based, the same kind originally used in bomber planes. When the war ended, the company received approval to invest $1 million in research to develop more advanced turbine engines. This was when the company created its first engine called the black box.

The company also manufactures commercial cockpit data recorders for aircrafts, also known as black boxes. Black boxes are important because they can be recovered from a plane wreck in the event of a crash. By analyzing any recordings on the black boxes, technicians and engineers may be able to decipher the reasons why a plane went down.

The aerospace division of the company has been involved in many major space missions over the past few decades. From 1966 to 1967, the company developed an orbital scanner program for NASA. In 1958 the company participated in the Vanguard project, which was the first successful satellite launched from earth by the U. S. In 1963, the company was involved with experiments to use giant balloons to carry cameras to high altitudes in order to study the atmosphere and its effects on photography.

Honeywell avionics also has numerous patents related to its designs and technology for sensor networks monitoring equipment for various planes. These patents include systems for measuring LED temperatures and determining the expected burn out time of the lights. This is all very important for monitoring aircraft safety for passengers as well as crew.
