Hydraulic Hose Assemblies Are Used In Many Industries

By Arline Bradley

The difference between standard rubber hoses and hydraulic hoses is the need for them to be re-enforced. Hydraulic hoses have a graded layer of stainless steel inserted within the outer sheath. This gives the hose the ability to cope with extremely high pressures. When connections need to be made from these houses crimped couplings are used to avoid weakening the system.

It is very important that these assemblies can be decoupled extremely quickly, thereby allowing them to be changed without the loss of air pressure within the system. Hydraulic hose assemblies can be found in the construction industry; where they are used on various types of machinery. The fact that they are quickly interchangeable means that little time is lost when switching the system between the different tools.

The industry that uses this type of assembly is continually modifying their equipment, which means that the hose manufactures have to meet new challenges. Some of these challenges can be easily met by the incorporation of new techniques. An example of this is when the hoses have to be a longer than normal. The Teflon tube is now being inserted to make the assembly able to cope with the higher pressures.

The outcome of introducing stainless steel etc to help strengthen the hoses is that they are a lot heavier and sturdier than the standard rubber equivalent. However, it is not just high pressures that these pipes have to be capable of withstanding, high temperatures can also be a problem. These are generated by hydraulic fluids being pumped round the system, and also by the tools that are using the system as well.

These days, a lot of these assemblies also incorporate a cooling system. This also adds a problem because the fluid within this system will also reach extremely high temperatures. It is therefore very important that safety inspections are carried out before each assembly becomes operational.

Companies that manufacture hydraulic systems are continually developing stronger and more flexible products. They are making use of modern techniques and materials so that their systems become more efficient and adept in coping with new challenges. It is not uncommon to find the inner layer or components of these hoses being protected from extreme conditions by a synthetic rubber cover, being fitted over the reinforced hose.

A complete assembly will comprise of a number of hoses and fittings. It is extremely important that each assembly is put together by someone who has been specifically trained in this task. These professionals will have been taught be to perform this task to ensure that the complete assembly you secure and there will be no serious accidents due to fittings becoming loose, or even totally disconnected.

They can never be stressed too highly that these assemblies are extremely dangerous if operated by personnel who have not been trained in their correct use. However, equal importance should be placed on protecting these hoses when in use, and this can be done by minimising the range that they operate over. This will increase their operational life, and the specifications to help you can be found in guidelines set down by the industry's governing body.
