A very important part of buying a used car is to take the time to personally check the vehicle and take it out for a test drive. It is only common sense to make sure that you research as much as you can about the used vehicle that you are thinking of purchasing since you are going to spend anywhere between five to fifteen thousand dollars just to own it. And for those who are first time used auto buyers, it is imperative that they seriously take a look at the vehicle they are interested in to reduce the possibility of ending up with a lemon car that will cost them even more in the coming months.

So if you are going to inspect the car, what should you do? To start with, you have conduct your inspection during the daytime to ensure there is sufficient light to see everything that is vital. At night, you will have to depend on the light produced by electric lamps to check the car and there is a good chance that you will notice scratches or any other kind of damage on the body of the car.

Take a look at how the car is parked, ensuring that it is on level ground, so you can easily see if there is the vehicle's body is sagging in any way; if you are buying from a private seller, ask them to take the car out of the garage so you can inspect it. You must also try to find out if there is an even wear on the tires; signs of uneven wear would indicate that there is a problem with the suspension of the car.

It is also advisable to go to various sites so that you could get some tips on what other things you have to keep an eye out for when you are inspecting the vehicle. It is also advisable to bring your own mechanic with you and let him conduct the inspection and test drive himself so you that would have the benefit of a professional opinion on whether the car is worth buying. Another tip is to test drive the car on a cool engine as this would give you a better idea about the car.

Before you inspect the car, you have to do some research on used car values and prices. It would be advisable to visit various sites to gather the information you need on used car prices, particularly for those vehicles that you are considering. This is so you would know if the car being sold to you is overpriced.

If you are going to buy a used car sold by a private seller, this information can come in handy because these people have a tendency to ask for more money than the prevailing market value of the vehicle. Knowing exactly what the car is worth would help you set a price to negotiate with the sellers. But it is important that you keep the amount you are offering within a reasonable range. This way you would not antagonize the sellers because you have to assume that they have done their homework too.
