Why Oxygen Sensor Recycling Is Important

By Eloise Hewitt

Oxygen sensors are electronic devices that are used to measure the proportion of this gas in a liquid or gas that is being analyzed. The gadget was developed in the late 1960s and the supervision was done by Doctor Gunter Bauman. One may experience some malfunctions when using the gadget but there are several ways in which oxygen sensor recycling can be done.

They are found in the exhaust of cars whereby they face the possibility of getting contaminated by the many fuels and gases passing along there such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen among other wastes. If the toxins contaminate the gadget, they hinder it from performing as well as it should and therefore affect performance. Oil and fuel contaminants may also cause damage to this gadget. Excessive soot building up on the ceramic points of the gadget reduces its ability to detect oxygen.

Poor quality gasoline may contain lead which shortens the lifespan of the sensors. When they get exposed to silicone and silicates, their ability to function in the right manner is hindered as well. The function of this device is usually to determine what the best ratio of air and fuel in the exhaust of the car is. When there is contamination, the gas combustion engine runs rich or lean which decreases the mileage of a vehicle.

The sensor has to be kept in good condition so that the fuel consumption level is kept to a minimum or as it should be. If the condition is poor, consumption could easily rise. Recycling of this gadgets helps to reduce costs that could otherwise be incurred as one is purchasing new items. It is not in all instances that one has to replace old sensors with new ones.

Cleaning is one option that can be taken to repair the old items. Once the dirty residue is got rid of, the device could once again function as if it were new. This happens in case the under-performance was being experienced as a result of formation of residue that inhibited performance. With cleaning however, one cannot always be certain that the device will work again.

Propane which is used in blow torches can be used to cleanse the item. The gadget always comes into contact with contaminants and a carbon coating may be formed which is very hard to dissolve using solvents. It requires the coat be removed in other ways.

Once the tip turns red after being heated, then immerse it in water. After doing that, blow compressed air into the tip and this will help in cleaning it. The deposits that were present are broken down and you can repeat the process severally to ensure that all residues are eliminated.

There are also electronic cleaners that help in elimination of toxic wastes. Electric cleaners cleanse using the spraying method and once dry, all the residues are gone. With this method, the nozzle must be kept at a safe distance from the sensor to avoid damage.
