A Good Read On ZDDP Oil Treatment

By Jordan Schmidt

This is a compound that was introduced into the market about 70 years ago and is fully known as Zinc dialydithiophosphate which is normally added to motor oils. It was initially meant to be used on aircraft engines but it was later seen that it can be used in vehicles as well. A lot of research was done and the result was that it could be useful in minimising the wear of engines when added to other oil products. ZDDP oil treatment plays a very big role in the motor industry.

The compound is believed to have anti-oxidant and corrosion resistance properties that are important in protecting the internal combustion engine from aging. Despite its good qualities, there have been efforts to stop it from being used as an additive due to the long term human toxicity associated with it. Proper disposal habits can help control this problem.

Adding to that, the catalytic converter is negatively affected by the zinc and phosphates that are present in the compound. Due to concerns by researchers, manufacturers reduced its concentration in oils and immediate effects were seen in both modern and classic engines. The classic engines were more affected as cases of total camshaft destruction and rapid wear were on the rise.

Although the name contains both zinc and phosphorus, the active ingredient in reducing wear in engines is phosphorus. A high concentration of zinc, according to experts, only increases the rate of wear. Old and modern engines differ in their need for ZDDP as the old ones cannot use newly formulated oils.

The importance of the compound is especially important during the break-in period for camshafts and lifters. It should be therefore considered as an additive in the motor oil during the run in period on a rebuilt classic engine. Motorists have to be extra careful with the amount of ZDDP added as an overdose can cause increase in wear.

Valvoline can offer a solution for many motorists looking for good oil as it was made for classical engines. The ZDDP comes with manufacturers instructions on the concentration levels to be used on oils with should be adhered to. It ensures that the engine will give you a better service and make driving an enjoyable activity which is an enhancement that everyone wishes for.

Many people are more familiar with fuel additives than oil additives. This is because fuel runs out fast while oil is only replaced after about three months. More people should be aware of the importance of engine health to the wellbeing of the vehicle in comparison to fuel. Very few people know that most of the products sold in the market already have additives.

The additives have different purposes and some of them are; detergents, dispersants, friction-modifiers and anti-acids. In order for a person to make a good decision, they should know what they want to buy and what it will do rather than rely on what the product claims to do and his expectations. It is very difficult to carry out tests in a bid to verify these claims in the market.
