Woman, At 93, Hangs Up Her Driving Gloves

By Cornelius Nunev

At 93-years-old, Rachel Veitch has driven the exact same Mercury since 1964. But she has decided it is the close of the road. Last week she told the media her driving days are over.

Enough miles to reach the moon

The 48 year old Mercury Comet Caliente has been driven by 93 year old Florida resident Veitch for quite some time. It has over 576,000 miles on it, which is enough to get to the moon and back. She is calling it quits with driving now though since she has lost some vision and ran a red light earlier in the month.

Showing up in the news

A couple of years ago, Veitch was in the media for having the Chariot at 559,000 miles. The car lasted through three sets of shocks, eight mufflers, 18 batters and three husbands. She loved the vehicle. She appeared on the Tonight show with Leno at that time.

Veitch explained that she only went through one accident with the vehicle, and it was a rear-end collision in 1980 where nobody was hurt.

Kept vehicle well

The Chariot has been able to survive as long as it has because of the devotion that Veitch has put into it. She has kept very close records of maintenance since she bought it in the winter of 1964 for $3,289.

Future of Chariot unclear

The true question is where the Chariot will go from here. Veitch is happy about putting it down to rest:

Veitch is hoping to get an offer from Jay Leno on the car after having it in a car show in Wisconsin in July.
