A General Overview Of The Slope Indicator Within A Hospital Facility

By Matthew White

Storage of information regarding patients by medical personnel has been made easier in medical facilities. Through the use of HL7 ADT and Slope Indicator, messages regarding a patients registration, admission, discharge and transfer can be easily transmitted. Since they can handle a large volume of information, they are the most commonly used means.

These messages are found in various types within the admissions, transfers and discharge range and are often fifty one in number. ADT messages are very vital in the communications done through HL7 as they provide a reason as to why the message is being sent. Depending on the kind of event, the urgency and the speeds at which that transmissions is done might be different.

A message feed is a means through which a provider can get information from an information system of a hospital or a clinic. The information has to be constantly updated to keep the traffic within the software moving. Some of the examples of updating of data that can be done include alteration of that address, a change or addition of a patients name and addition of a relatives name.

As soon as an update is done, the data immediately flows to all the sections of that hospital or clinic where it is needed. The data transmitted can be received either through the point to point form of interface or through that interface engine. Some hospitals have connections to external laboratories, therefore information can reach such locations through the use of an interface engine.

The trigger events make the different messages vary in the way they are structured. This means that a message that results from a transfer of a patient will be different from that of a change of address that may be done. The two major components that are present in any kind of message however are patient identification and patient visit.

A patients identification has data which reveals the identity of a person such as the date of birth, the national identification number, gender and the name. It also includes an individuals location like the address and the mobile number. On the other hand, the patients visit has data like the date and time, the patient last visited and the name of physician who handled the case.

Several aspects are put into consideration when placing the messages into categories in the interface. The main one is the positioning of that information in the interface and analyzing the necessary or optional data. It is also vital to consider whether data can be repeated in other areas or not. Furthermore, it is necessary to put the values in the sections through the use of figures and numbers.

In summary, the ADT messages allow a connection between all the systems present within a medical facility. Thus the medical practitioners are able to easily plan procedures and prescribe the right kind of medications. Furthermore, once appointments have been completed, the data is automatically stored for future reference by patients who wish to book another appointment in the same clinic.
