Reagan May Racing Into First Place

By Robert Kelly

This is a person who's known she wanted to drive race cars since she was only nine years old. This passion she was seemingly born with has led her to follow her dreams and achieve many successes along the way. Now, over a decade after she first decided upon her ambitious dream, Reagan May Racing is inspiring people everywhere to show them that no matter who you are, you can do whatever you want.

May was awarded the prestige of Rookie of the Year for the 2010 SuperPro series when she was 16. At Luxemburg Speedway, she was the IMCA Youngest Winner. In 2014, TUNDRA named her the Rookie of the Year for the Super Late Model.

Before she won a feature even in the TUNDRA Super Late Model Series, only one other woman had ever achieved this before. It is important for young women and girls to have role models like these so they can actually see themselves in the driver's seat and be inspired to take up the motorsport. This is how she has achieved both personal success and success for aspiring female drivers everywhere.

One of the big influences on her driving career was her father, Kip, who is a driver himself. Both she and her brother, Parker, followed in their father's footsteps, so they all grew up as a family of racers both competing against each other and working as a team. Their mom participates by helping in those critical moments in the pit, so everyone in the family gets involved.

Besides just being able to operate these vehicles, she is also highly proficient at diagnosing problems and fixing them on the spot. She went to Michigan Technology University and got a degree in Mechanical Engineering. This gives her a big leg up on the competition when things inevitably go wrong.

Since it is hard for anyone to become great in a sport like this, May says that she looks up to anyone who has managed to achieve widespread success in competitive driving. She especially looks up to the successful women because, like many of the sports out there, it is almost always men who are the dominant figures in it. One of her greatest role models, however, is her dad, known for racing SCCA.

As someone who is on the road a lot, this driver does not have any specific track that she calls home. Having so much experience on all kinds of different tracks, she has built up a level of experience that allows her to work with different conditions. All she needs is to be put on a track and she will be able to race on it.

May is a big fan of competition, so getting to compete against so many other talented drivers is an aspect that she loves about this sport. She also loves the fact that even though they are rivals on the race track, they all get off the track and are family and friends once more. She says that people in this community are like a family, so there is a strong bond between her and the other drivers.
